The Cape Fear Colts Volleyball team had a little bit of a bumpy start to the season, but recent developments have made changes for the better. The Colts came into last week with a record of 1-4, with their one win coming from a conference victory over Overhills. Two of the four losses came against Patriot conference foes Gray’s Creek and Terry Sanford.
Vast improvements have been made in the last week by the team. The Colts soundly defeated Douglas Byrd three sets to none, West Johnston three sets to one, and South View last night three sets to none. The Lady Colts have stepped their game up, losing only one set of their last ten.
Cape Fear comes into the 2019 season with 3 seniors: Taylor Melvin, Marlie Horne, and Tori McGowan.
Tori McGowan has been a major component in the team so far this season. “Anywhere and anytime we need her in the game, she can go in and take care of business and we love her out there,” said volleyball Head Coach Jeff Bruner.
Coach Bruner has high expectations of his young team. He thinks they are full of potential waiting to be awakened. He wants them to play like the team has played recently for the rest of the season and keep the hot streak going.
“Minimize small errors and sweep the rest of the conference,” said Coach Bruner. Coach Bruner’s believes that simple and small fixes will restore Colts volleyball to the same level of success that they have enjoyed in recent years.
Senior Marlie Horne has effortlessly stepped into her new leadership role. As a 4 year starter, she understands spreading confidence throughout the team has a big impact on how the team plays.
“We have come together as a team these last few games and that’s the way we have to play the rest of the season if we want to be successful,” said Horne.
The future’s looking bright for the red hot Colts. Their next match is at Pine Forest (5-3) Thursday, September 12, 2019 at 6:00 pm. Your support would go a long way in “setting” the ladies up for success!
