This week’s athlete of the week is Julius Ferguson, a promising runner for our cross country and track team. This is his first year running cross country. He is not entirely new to running, as he was on the outdoor track team last year.
This past weekend at the Jaguar Prowl, Ferguson crushed his original Personal Record (PR) with his new PR of 16:47.47. He beat his time of 17:11 from the Jungle Run. He has also moved from the third spot to the first spot for the boys team.
As a new face to Cape Fear, Ferguson was not aware of the cross country team. He enjoyed running but never realized his true potential in cross country until Coach Hanes noticed him during the outdoor track season.
“During a bleacher workout, Coach Hanes approached me about becoming a distance runner for the outdoor track team,” said Ferguson. “I tried it out and it went well, so I decided to run Cross Country.”
This weekend Ferguson was determined to beat his PR of 17.11 from the Jungle Run.
“I had a winning mentality,” said Ferguson. “I knew our team had been training hard and the goal was to place well during this meet.”
He did just that, at the Jaguar Prowl he placed 3rd overall, rocketing him to the top spot in the Patriot Athletic Conference.
“My goal is to continue improving my time and leading the conference as an individual,” said Ferguson. Without the proper mentality in running, you will never get better. “Without my coach and teammates I couldn’t have achieved my goal,” said Ferguson, with regard to what helped him get in the right mindset.
Ferguson is passionate about almost all sports, his favorites including football, basketball, running, and soccer. However, running is his all time favorite. He is hungry for some PR’s in order to make it to the state championship meet this year and to beat the tigers of South View!
