The Colts got back on their A game Friday night, beating the Jack Britt Buccaneers 20-12. The Colts are now 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the United 8 Conference. Both the Colts and Buccaneers came into the contest at 2-1 in the conference, each suffering their only defeat to undefeated 71st, so this was a big win for the Colts as far as where they would fall in the U-8 standings.

This game had all the makings of a defensive slugfest. Jack Britt entered with a punishing physical rushing attack. The Colts prided themselves on tough, physical defense. The matchup absolutely lived up to the hype, as both teams struggled to find the end zone early.

The Colts moved the ball well, but could not find paydirt in the first quarter. Quality special teams play kept the ball on the Jack Britt side of the field for most of the half. This special teams play showed up big on a botched snap from Britt punter Luca Duarte midway through the second quarter.

RJ McDonald makes a jaw dropping catch

The Colts recovered the ball at the Britt 6 yard line, which led to a Keyshon Washington score that put the Colts up 7-0 late in the second. Washington had 43 yards for the night and two touchdowns.

Jack Britt attempted to answer with a late drive before the half ended, but had a field goal taken off the board due to an offsides penalty on Cape Fear. The ensuing attempt was blocked by the Colts, their second big special teams play of the night . This kept the momentum up for the Colts right before the half, energizing the Colts going into the half.

In the third quarter, Ian Lowery recovered a fumble at the Britt 12 yard line. Taking full advantage, Junior quarterback Cole Wilson then connected with Senior receiver R.J. McDonald in the endzone with an absolutely spectacular catch. The Colts attempted to go for two on the extra point, but Keyshon Washington was unable to convert. This made the score 13-6 in favor of the Colts. McDonald had 5 receptions for 62 yards Friday night.

¨This was one of our first big wins for this season and I think it really brought the momentum up which will hopefully carry into next week. We just have to focus on our fundamentals and our skills to win¨ said McDonald.

The Bucs stayed in the fight and answered with a 33 yard pass to move the ball down to the Colt 4 yard line. They capped off the drive with a run from quarterback Jackson Powell. The extra point was blocked, leaving the score at 13-6.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Colts managed to put together an eight play drive down the field where Washington was set up for his second touchdown of the night. The play brought the score to 20-6 with five minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Cape Fear was set to run out the clock, but a late fumble and a personal foul penalty forced the momentum back to the Buccaneers with a minute left on the clock.

The Buccaneers ended up scoring on the last play of the game when the ball bounced off the waiting hands of a Colt Defensive Back into the hands of a Buccaneer receiver in the end zone. This made the score 20-12, making the game seem much closer than it actually was.

¨Defensively we had a great game and played well as a whole. Cole also did a great job and made good reads to find his receivers .I’m really proud of my guys,¨ said Colts head coach Jacob Thomas.

Quarterback Cole Wilson had one of his best games of his career. Wilson completed 21 out of 33 passes for 203 yards .He was also awarded player of the game.

¨We had huge plays on defense and special teams to set up the offense in great field position which led to huge scores that helped build momentum. Big stops on defense helped get us into scoring position which led to a great team win.¨ said Wilson.

This Friday The Colts take on the 4-1 South View Tigers. This game will be huge and could be the deciding factor in who earns second place in The United 8 conference. It’s also senior night for the Colts. Be sure to be there to cheer on your Colts!
