On Tuesday November, 29th the Lady Colts Basketball Team took home a huge win against our biggest Rivals, the Terry Sanford Bulldogs. The Colts ended the game with a score 58-49. This was a huge win for the Cape Fear Colts. The Ladies had to work together to make this happen.
Jayda Angel is only a Junior, but you wouldn’t know that from her skills on the court. Angel is an amazing player with so many skills and talents as a player. Jayda scored 23 points in the victory and dealt 4 assists on the evening. She has not only been a huge asset to the team offensively, but she has also been a great teammate. Jayda has been a varsity player since her freshman year and she shows no signs of slowing down on getting better each season.
“It feels like a big accomplishment [beating Terry Sanford], but we still have more work to do,” explained Angel.
Following Angel’s lead, the Colts were tough from the start. By the end of the first quarter, the score was 9-7 in favor of the Colts. The game was shaping up to be a close one early on.
Kayia Starling is a Junior and has never failed to show off what skills she has and how she can benefit the team. Starling scored 16 against the Bulldogs and had 2 assists. Not only did she have 16 points but she drained four 3 pointers. Starling has shown just how much she deserves her spot, as she has also been on the varsity team since her freshman year.
“It feels great after losing to them in my previous two high school seasons. It feels good to end their streak of beating schools in Cumberland county,” said Starling.
Starling’s work from beyond the arc was vital to the Colts success. Her points kept the Colts close at halftime, down 24-26. As advertised, this was shaping up to be a heavyweight battle.
Coach Graham has been a great coach to the team, and he never fails to be there for the girls no matter if it’s a win or a loss. Coach Graham has been coaching at Cape Fear since 2014. He has coached these girls very well and we can see that by the outcome of their games. Each season with Graham at the helm has seen a better record than the previous season. Graham puts in the time to make sure the girls are ready by teaching them new skills, new plays, and watching film to see where the team can improve.
“We played well; everyone contributed to getting the win Tuesday,” said Graham. “It’s still early in the season, and everyone is still getting comfortable in their role but I saw each player do what we asked them to do when they got in the game.”
Under Graham’s direction and tough play from the Colts, the girls were able to stymie the Bulldogs offense, taking the lead for good at the end of the 3rd going up 39-34.
The defense continued to play tough through the 4th, fending off a solid Bulldog offense. The girls were able to close out the fourth, outscoring Terry Sanford for the 58-49 win.
Be sure to come out and support the Colts at their next game Monday December, 5th at 6pm. We will be playing on our home court once again against Purnell Swett. You will not want to miss out on seeing these amazing athletes. They can use all the support they can get. Good luck Colts it’s already the start of a great season!
