On Tuesday, September 5, the Cape Fear girl’s golf team traveled to Pinecrest Country Club for their first match of the season. Paving the way to continue their winning streak, the Lady Colts took first, winning by 12 strokes with a team score of 148.

The Lady Colts went into the match well-prepared and ready for anything. The ladies were prepared to play eighteen holes in the sweltering 95 degree weather. However, due to the excessive heat, the match was cut short to nine holes.

This was a great opportunity for the ladies to continue their dominance in the United 8 Conference. Attending the match and coming in behind the Colts were Purnell Swett with a team score of 160, Grays Creek with a team score of 162, Jack Britt with a team score of 174, and Lumberton with a team score of 188.

The medalist of the match was Kate Wilson who shot a 47. Wilson is a Senior who has been a part of the Cape Fear girls golf team since her freshman year; Wilson has shown tremendous progress since then. With play on Wilson’s level, Coach Edge has experienced great success in recent years, appearing in state championships five times out of the last six years.

“I have no doubt that we will be conference champs if we keep putting in the work and effort. We continue to push ourselves everyday, so I’m excited to see where that takes us as a team,” said Wilson.

The team has put in countless hours of work to uphold the gold standard that is Cape Fear Golf. This hard work ultimately led to their first win of the season. The Colts boast an extremely senior-heavy roster this year, and the wealth of experience seems to be paying off.

Seniors Alex Serbio, Gracey Horne, Hannah Roney, Ansley Wilkerson, and Gracin Snow all scored well for the Colts. Serbio came in right behind Wilson with a score of 49. Horne finished sixth overall with a score of 52, while Roney tied for eighth overall with a score of 57. Wilkerson tied for twelfth overall with a score of 59, and Snow tied for twenty-third with a score of 63.

Coach Todd Edge started this program in 2012, and it has progressed and skyrocketed ever since.

“I am very impressed this year with these girls and their development these last few weeks. I see their progression day by day, and am excited to see how the rest of the season goes for us,” said Edge.

The girls have their second match Monday, September 11th, at Gates Four Country Club, hoping to keep their winning streak alive. We can not wait to see how our Cape Fear Girls continue to improve throughout the season.
