From being born in Okinawa Japan and then later moving to Oahu in Hawaii, now teaching at Cape Fear High School, Mrs. Kelly Osornio is this week’s teacher of the week! This is her 2nd year teaching at Cape Fear, and she is already a much appreciated teacher and an important part of the Cape Fear staff.

Mrs.Osornio attended Aliamanu Middle School located on O’ahu Hawaii. She later then moved to North Carolina where she attended South View High School to finish out her high school years. She stayed in North Carolina after constantly moving due to her dad being in the military. As for college she first attended NC state, but ended up at East Carolina University (ECU) graduating from there in 2004.

She originally went to college to major in being a nurse, but ended up with majors in Elementary Education and Child Development because of her plans to have children. She knew she would have to take care of them and while they were in school and knew that nursing would take up a lot of valuable time.

She was first offered a job teaching in a pre-k class at Eastover Central Elementary School and then later on switched to 5th grade science. She worked at Rockfish Elementary and Mac Williams Middle School for a total of 2 years.

She took time off of teaching for about five years and had her three daughters. When going back to work she didn’t want to teach, so she started taking classes to become a nurse. She ended up switching back to teaching after she got a good offer of only working 50% of the time as a pre-k teacher. This got her back into officially teaching as she then spent 11 years at Eastover before moving back to Cape Fear High School.

She currently teaches Biology and scientific research at Cape Fear High School. When asked what her favorite part of her job is, she says “I like when I can get kids excited about learning science.” She also enjoys coaching Junior Varsity football cheerleading and Varsity basketball cheerleading.

From teaching, to having her children, to going to school for 5 years, then back to teaching, here are some insides of her life in between her teaching years. Mrs.Osornio’s likes sleeping in and really enjoys the fall season, her kids. Her favorite movie is the Labyrinth and her favorite book is the Phantom Tollbooth. She enjoys coaching cheerleading after all 3 of her kids grew up doing competition cheer since they were young.

Mrs.Osornio has been married for almost twenty years as of April to her husband Pedro Osornio, and they have three kids, three dogs, and three cats. Her two daughters Alyssa Osornio and Amelia Osornio, are twins and sophomores here at Cape Fear and her oldest, Ava Osornio is a senior and will be graduating this spring! Mrs.Osornio adores her husband and her children, as much as her cats and dogs. Her dogs names are Bennie, Ollie and Charlotte, and her cats names are Apollo, Nimbus, and Simon.

Mrs. Osornio also enjoys traveling with her family. Over this last summer they spent eleven days traveling into Europe visiting places like Paris, France, and London in the United Kingdom. One of the most memorable experiences from their trip was the Lana Del Ray concert they went to.

“I think Mrs. Osornio has been a great teacher ever since elementary school when she first taught me,” says Kenny Dehu.

Destiny Tarusan, her teacher assistant says “I think she’s so nice, she’s great!” All of the students in her classes agree, and all have wonderful things to say about her.

Mrs.Osornio is well appreciated throughout the school as a very sincere teacher.  All she wants is to see her students succeed in life and get excited about science. All of these qualities are what helped make her this week’s candidate for Teacher of the Week!
