Last Friday night, Cape Fear hosted Douglas Byrd for a big homecoming game. The Colts came ready to play, making quick work of the Eagles, winning easily 58-0.

Everything seemed to go the Colts way Friday, as they kicked off to the Eagles to start the game and Colts strong safety Arrington Kee forced a fumble and recovered it.

“After recovering the fumble and putting the offense in a good field position, it brought energy to the team and set the tone for the rest of the game,” said Kee.

The Colts quickly scored after the turnover on a 4 yard run from senior running back Favour Murtala. After the Colt kickoff pinned Byrd inside their own 15 yard line, the Colts defense then continued to put a stop to any Eagles offense. After 3 straight tackles for loss, Douglas Byrd was forced to punt. Cape Fear was able to capitalize and block the punt, forcing an Eagle safety.

At the end of the first quarter, the Colts led 23-0.

The Colts came out in the second quarter even more ambitious. Their aggressive defense also continued to keep the Eagles off of the scoreboard. In fact, the Eagles were unable to get positive yardage on any play in the first half.

Senior cornerback Mekhi Coleman was also able to get in on the scoring action, intercepting a Byrd pass and returning it for a 25 yard touchdown.

The Colts offense ended up scoring another 35 points in the second quarter. This put the Colts up 58-0 at the half.

To start the third quarter, the Colts received the ball. The healthy lead allowed Cape Fear to empty their bench and play several junior varsity players who dressed for the game.

“It was great to give the younger guys some experience because we have a bunch of seniors on the team,” said Junior Wide Receiver Jack Edwards. “We are going to need those guys to step up in the future to keep up our standard.”

The offense continued to move the ball throughout the quarter but  couldn’t find the end zone. Meanwhile, the Colts defense continued to keep the Eagles off the board.

By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, there was a running clock, meaning that the game clock runs constantly without stopping between plays.  With the running clock, the game moved quickly, which made it difficult for either team to score. This ended the game with the Colts on top, winning 58-0.

Make sure to come support the Colts this Friday as they travel to take on the Jack britt Buccaneers.
