On Friday, October 27th Grays Creek hosted the Cape Fear Colts on the Bears senior night. It was a must win game for the Bears to even have a shot to be in the playoffs and a must win game for the Colts to have the opportunity for a home playoff game for the first time since the 2016 State Runner-up team. So both teams came with their best shot. “We knew it was a big game for them and that they would bring their best but we wanted the win more than them so we knew we had to come out and execute,” said star senior running back Favour Murtala.

To start the game Cape Fear kicked the ball off to the Bears. Grays Creek moved quickly scoring on their first drive of the night giving them a ealy lead of 7-0 after a successful PAT.
After Cape Fear took possession, the Colts responded with a long run setting them up inside the Bears’ den at their 15 yard line. After another rush Cape Fear closed the score gap to 7-6. Unfortunately the Colts missed the PAT leaving them just short of tying the game. With only 1 minute left in the first quarter.

After a series of punts and turnovers, points were finally put on the board by Cape Fear allowing them to snatch the lead and up the score to 7-12. The Colts finished the job this time around with a successful PAT adding to the score and leaving it at 7-13 with two minutes left in the first half.

After another costly turnover from Grays Creek the Colts took possession with just under a minute left in the half. A long pass set them up in scoring position. After a couple failed attempts to add another touchdown to the score before half they took a field goal and placed the score at 7-16 at the end of the first half.

The Colts received the ball to start the third quarter but didn’t get anything going forcing them to punt. Grays Creek capitalized on that and scored, closing the score gap to 14-16. And that would be the last time the Bears would get into the endzone. “We made some changes after that second touchdown. We knew if we let them stay in the game they would only get better as time went on, so we had to crush all their hope,” mentioned junior cornerback Kamari Faison.

Cape Fear then ran away with the lead scoring 3 more touchdowns in the third quarter placing the score at 14-38. But they weren’t finished scoring another touchdown placing them at 14-45.

Later on “Mr. Reliable” Fransisco Rodriguez absolutely smashed a 44 yard field goal to cap off the win. The Bears desperately tried to muster up at least one more score before the end of regulation but fell short throwing an interception to end the game.

The Colts are now 8-2 on the season and will host Western Almanance for round one of the state playoffs this friday at 7:00pm. Come out and support your Colts!
