On Thursday November 30th the Cape Fear swim team had their first meet of the season at Fayetteville State University. There were 6 different teams in the girls division and 5 teams swimming against the boys. The girls came out on top, seemingly like they do every year, and the boys came up just short of 1st, placing 2nd.

“The first meet is in the books, we saw lots of new swimmers and there were lots of students stepping up and trying new events,” said assistant Coach Amey Shook.

The meet started off with the girls 200 yard Medley Relay, the girls finished 2nd and posted a time of 2:28. The relay team consisted of Sophomore Amelia Osonrio, Junior Andi Brinker, Junior Grace Sherbert, and anchoring with Sophmore Dani Fick. Thee boys 200 Medley Relay immediately followed. They placed 4th with a time of 2:08. The Boys relay consisted of Sophomore Brandon Patton, Junior Alex Bridges, Junior Mason Handcock, and Junior Evan Smith.

The next event was the girls 200 Yard Freestyle with Mary Catherine Shook placing first with a time of 2:30. Due to an injury, Shook was unable to flip turn during the race, but she still left all the other swimmers in her wake. Lucy Brinker also swam the 200 and placed third with a time of 3:09. This is Lucy’s first swim meet. She is still learning how everything works, but she overcame her first meet jitters and finished strong.

Soon after that the girls 200 Yard IM started, with Anamarie Brenes and Grace Sherbert swimming, placing 2nd and 4th respectively with times of 3:03 and 3:12, earning the team 32 points. In the boys 200 yard IM Mason Handcock and Evan Smith swam the event and placed 3rd and 4th with times of 3:08 and 3:16, earning the team 33 points.

“The 200 IM is a very tough race due to you having to do all 4 strokes but I’m very glad I was put in the event because we need all the points we can get so we can win,  we can’t lose our win streak this year,” said Anamarie.

To wrap the meet up, the 400 Yard Relay finished things off. The Girls won the event, placing 1st with a time of 4:52. Sophomore Lainey Williams started them off, Sophomore Amelia Osornio dove in after her, next was Sophomore Anamarie Brenes, Lastly Junior Mary Catherine Shook brought home another win.

The boys relay started after them. The boys team finished 2nd with a time of 4:37, Junior Mason Handcock was the first to dive in, next was Sophomore Nick Serbio, after him Junior Jaxson Davis dove in, and lastly Junior Alex Bridges finished it off.

The Colts had a combined score of 637 between both teams which was enough to finish 2nd overall. The next meet will be held at Fayetteville State University on Thursday December 7th. Come out and cheer on the Colts while you breathe in that fresh, heavily chlorinated air!
