Have you ever wanted to find equality in the world, much less your own school? Wanted to find a unique group of people, diverse people to relate to?
Introducing Cape Fear’s Equality Club, held in room 115 and takes place once every Tuesday and Thursday of the month. The club, guided by Ashley Beniot and Sasha Preddie and is led by seniors Arora Mullin,T’zipporah Sanchez, and Alexis Owen aims to find equality and to make a safe space for LGBTQ students, POC students, or students who are neurodivergent. Those who do not fall underneath these categories are welcome as well, as this club is for everyone.
“Our officers, sponsors, and members welcome anyone with open arms. The club has many expectations that we go over every meeting, such as privacy, empathy, and compassion,” said Arora Mullin, Cape Fear’s Equality club leader.
Cape Fear’s Equality Club mission statement reads as follows:
“We, the Colts’ Equality Club, plan and strive to incorporate equality, diversity, and unity to Cape Fear High School. We are here to provide every Colt a safe place to feel, express, and exist freely.”
Cape Fear’s Equality club mission is to provide a space for students to give students a voice and a platform that is not otherwise provided. It also gives them an opportunity to make friends that are similar in ways, but very different in many other ways. Ashley Benoit brings a welcoming vibe to the club and Sasha Preddie helps students understand themselves more in depth.
“I have started to see students who are typically quiet and reserved opening up and sharing with others in the club,” said Ms. Preddie.
The leaders disseminate projects in order to remind club members to be open minded about other cultures, people, and situations.
Equality is something that we need in an environment in order to develop and evolve. If we don’t have diversity and equality, how are we able to expand our thinking? If we don’t interact with people that have different ideas, backgrounds, mindsets, how are we expected to understand people and society? We need equality for everyone, no matter who you are.
“It provides a safe place for anyone to go to socialize, express, and feel seen. The club is welcome to anyone who wants to join and support our cause,” said Mullin.
If you’re looking for a place to belong, the Equality Club is for you. If interested see Mrs. Benoit and Ms. Preddie.
