Lady Colts basketball is making history with a 8-0 record and an unprecedented number 3 ranking in the state. The girls are showing zero signs of slowing down.
“The focus was to play good defense, have a lot of steals, and play fast,” said Head Coach Brian Graham.
The Colts traveled to Purnell Swett Friday, January 5th, with the hopes of extending their winning streak to 9-0. The Colts had an easy win over Purnell with a score of 73-43. This easy win extended the streak and kept this season’s expectations high.
In the first quarter the Colts took a commanding lead, jumping on the Rams 26 to 13. Jayda Angel was her normal video game glitch self, scoring early and often. Teralyn Harris was a force in the paint, pulling down 5 rebounds. The Colts started strong and never looked back. By halftime, Angel scored half of her 38 points and helped the Colts lead 42 to 28 at the break.
After the half, the Colts picked right back up where they left off. They took command early in the 3rd, led by some key baskets by Angel. Harris spread the wealth by throwing in 7 assists on the night.
“The First quarter we didn’t come out the way we wanted to, but they responded and quickly took charge in the 2nd quarter,” said Graham.
The Colts worked together as a team with Angel leading in rebounds, Harris in assists and Anijah Jones locking down Purnell’s offense, with some clutch defensive stops down the stretch.
“We used aggressiveness and played as a team, played great defense, and adjusted well to the opponents offense,” said Angel after the game.
Angel was the leading scorer on the night, scoring 38 points. Jayda holds a rank of 1st in NC and 4th in the nation in points per game. She continues to dominate the competition with an average score of 34.1 points per game.
“Being close to the State Finals showed the girls that it’s not guaranteed, you have to work for it, it’s not given to you.” said Graham.
Last season our Lady Colts were only two games away from making the state finals. They plan on practicing each day and improving their skills in order to exceed last year’s finish.
