Javoni Brooks is a student athlete at Cape Fear High School. He has been at Cape Fear since 2021 (his freshman year). Before attending Cape Fear Javoni attended Mac Williams Middle School. His favorite thing about Cape Fear is the teachers because they are very understanding.
“As long as you get your work done they’re just chill,” said Brooks
Growing up Javoni lived with his younger brother, (Jolek), and his Uncles (Joe and Terrence) who he feels as though are the reason he got in the habit of playing video games. Javoni is an avid gamer who likes to play Fortnite, Call of Duty, and Roblox.
Before high school he played baseball. He played (center field) but decided not to try out for the highschool team. His uncle (Nickolas) ran cross country and track for the Colts and was the person who encouraged him to try to pursue both in high school.
Javoni is close with his younger brother; they play video games together every day. In middle school at Mac Williams, Javoni played the violin. It was in orchestra that he got some valuable advice from his teacher, Ms. Montague.
She told him, “if you don’t know what you’re doing just fake it till you make it”. After the concert she told them that even if they faked it they still sounded good.
Javoni runs track because he wants to be faster, and he enjoys running with his friends. He runs cross country in order to be in shape and faster for track. He also really enjoys working out with friends. Javoni feels as though his biggest accomplishment is receiving a medal for the Jungle run over the summer for cross country.
Javoni’s favorite thing about running track is being able to hang out with friends after running. He says that after a meet they often get to walk around and eat after cleaning up. He also mentions that he genuinely likes some of the races, but the best part overall is the friendships and the time they spend together.
At track regionals Javoni was told by his coach, “just be around people who motivate you to get your goals accomplished.”
In the future Javioni would like to run track in college. As a career he would like to pursue real estate or major in either science or nursing in college. Science is his favorite subject and his favorite teacher is Ms. Edwards. Javoni is interested in attending college at Fayetteville State.
“Quote from Mrs. Edwards about what kind of student he is”
One of Javoni’s best attributes as a person is his ability to listen and reflect on conversations that people have with him. One of those things Javoni was told by his friend and teammate Kahlil that stuck with him was, “I have to work hard to get where I want and everyday somebody is training harder than me so I have to train harder than them, every day and every week until I can get where I want.”
Outside of school Javoni likes to work out, go out with friends and play games. In addition to playing Fortnite and Roblox, he also enjoys playing scary games. He tries to work out and go to the movies with friends whenever he can.
For his birthday this year he and his friends went to the movies and the arcade. He really enjoys hanging out with his friends so he tries to do it as much as possible.
Although he hasn’t traveled in a while, Javoni enjoys traveling during summer and he’s been to Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York, and Florida. He mostly traveled with family when he was younger. In New York he visited his family in the Bronx and in Florida he visited his uncle. When he was four years old he and his family traveled to Pennsylvania to visit his grandfather and the rest of his extended family that lived there.
Something Javoni wants everyone to know about him is that although his face doesn’t show it all the time he is a very nice person. Javoni expressed to us that his grandmother is the most influential person in his life. This is because she’s always understood him.
“She is very caring, sweet and kind. She loves to spoil people”.
Javoni has many interests and is active in his school and his community. He is a perfect choice for student of the week. Congratulations Javoni!
