The Lady Colts are still on track after a nail biting victory over the South View Tigers.

“We wanted to apply pressure on the ball, have less than eight turnovers, and maintain our composure,” said head coach Brian Graham

The Colts traveled to the Tigers den Friday, January 15th, leading to the closest games the girls have played all season. The girls fought hard and brought home the victory, extending one of the best runs Cape Fear has ever had.

The game was intense from the start, and the crowd quickly realized how close this game was going to be. The Tigers struck hard and fast with Nahmiah Aekins scoring early and often ending the quarter 10-13 in favor of the Tigers.

When you have enjoyed as much success as the girls have had in the last two seasons, you get your opponent’s best shot every time out. The Colts were prepared for this scenario and responded accordingly.

The game stayed close into the second quarter. The Colts and Tigers fought back and forth the whole first half. Anijah Jones showed the Tigers she is not just any player by dominating the Tigers inside the arc with three field goals made and 12 rebounds. The score at the half was 25-29 in favor of the Tigers.

“I reminded them we are the better team and to stop looking for calls from the officials. We have to beat south view and the officials,” said Coach Graham.

The Colts came out of the half more motivated than ever and changed the tides for the rest of the game. Jayda Angel shot 60% from the field, throwing up 17 shots alone in the second half. She showed that she was not afraid to take control of the game. With Angel’s prime shooting and Jones dominating the boards, the Colts took the lead 38-33 after the third.

The Colts continued their dominance from the half scoring 18 in the fourth quarter. Elizabeth Kirkland found her footing, scoring more than half of her total points. The Colts stampede over the Tigers, finishing the game 56-42 bringing the Colts record to 11-1 overall, and 5-0 in U8 Conference play.

“We focused on our mistakes coming out the half, which led to the win,” said Jones

Jones had a great game scoring very important points that helped change the momentum for the Colts. Jones has shown improvement all season and it showed against the Tigers. Down the stretch Jones put heavy pressure on the ball on defense to go along with her 12 rebounds, and 3 assists .

The Colts are preparing for their next game against the Gray’s Creek Bears on Tuesday. The Colts have only shown improvement since their first loss and continue their dominance over the county. State playoffs are in the near future for the Colts as they continue to improve and prepare for a strong run.
