Cape Fear High School has many successful teachers and staff that we are very grateful for. This week, our students have chosen Mrs. Marissa Velez. We are so lucky to have her working with us!

Mrs. Velez is an Earth and Physical science teacher and has been teaching at Cape Fear for 7 years. While she was in highschool she worked with students as a mentor and tutor. Mrs.Velez comes from a long line of teachers in her family including her dad, grandmother, and several aunts.

She originally worked at a hospital for 9 years as a research scientist. As her research continued she realized she wanted to teach. She pursued her teaching career at the University of Maryland for her undergraduate degree in Biology and then later received her masters in Public Health from the University of Rochester in 2012.

“I truly love students, they are honest and have real spirit. I’m so glad I changed careers.” Says Mrs Velez.

Mrs. Velez makes learning science enjoyable every single day in her classroom. She understands that science content isn’t always a student’s strong suit or what they want to be doing when they are at school but she always gets her students excited and interested in what she’s teaching.

“Science has never been my best subject but this semester I see a tremendous amount of improvement because of her patience and the way she always makes sure you understand what you are learning.” says Earth Science student Elizabeth Kennedy.

Outside of teaching Mrs Velez enjoys hanging out with her family and friends. She likes crafting and listening to music but also she loves to take a good nap. Mrs Velez is known for being a very creative person. Her hobbies include baking, making things like t-shirts and banners. She loves the outdoors and exploring new things.

All of Mrs. Velez’ students know that she believes in snacking! She will always have some sort of candy or treat in her classroom for her students. Her classroom is filled with review games and prizes. Her teaching method is a fun way for students to learn.

Mrs Velez cherishes her family. She is married and has 2 daughters, one is 9 and the other is 19. She didn’t have siblings but as she grew up she made friends along the way that she considers family.

“Everyday Mrs Velez has a positive mindset no matter what could be going on. I think everyone needs a teacher like her to always help you look towards the bright side” says Earth Science student Collin Shick.

Mrs Velez has a way of teaching to keep students interested and engaged with her creative teaching methods. She is very passionate about what she teaches and never fails to make it an exciting day in her classroom.

We hope she continues her career with us at Cape Fear High School. Mrs. Velez has made learning enjoyable for students who never thought it was possible. The staff and students greatly appreciate her!
