Cape Fear had an amazing win against Douglas Byrd last Wednesday.
The Colts were looking to notch another win under their belt against the Eagles. They were eager to get back in the win column, and Douglas Byrd provided the perfect opportunity for that. Junior Guard Damien Gary made sure of just that by leading the team with 15 points and 9 assists. Mekhai Coleman also helped out for the win with 8 rebounds.
The Colts got off to a slow start in the first, but they still came out with the lead thanks to their tough defense, ending the first 11-10.
In the second quarter, they stepped their game up on both sides of the floor. They held Douglas Byrd to only 8 points while scoring 20 points on the offensive end. The Colts went into the locker room ready to keep the momentum in the second half leading 31-18.
Cape Fear carried that momentum into the second half ready to seal the game and pick up a much needed conference win. The defense continued to play tough and held the Eagles to only 5 points in the third quarter.
They ended the game strong, scoring 33 points in the fourth. The Eagles made a game of it by scoring 20 points in the final frame, but it wasn’t enough as Cape Fear won handily 77-43.
“We played well in the second half; we had back to back games, so I felt we were fatigued early but we competed in the second half,” said Head Coach Alphonza Kee.
The Colts were back in action against Lumberton on Friday. Damien Gary and Arrington Kee had a fantastic performance in the tough matchup against the Pirates, both scoring 13 points, but the Colts came up short, losing 48-77.
Senior Forward Rico McDonald helped out on the opposite end of the court putting up 4 Defensive Rebounds. Senior Mekhai Coleman also helped out by throwing in 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals on the night.
The Colts showed a lot of hustle and solid defense in their bid for another conference victory. Unfortunately the effort wasn’t enough, and the Colts suffered their fourth conference loss of the season, leaving their record at 3-4 in the United8 Conference and 6-9 overall.
The Colts came into the game on Tuesday with high hopes against Purnell looking to avenge Friday’s loss. Arrington Kee made sure that Cape Fear got back in the win column by leading all scorers with 28 points. The Colts won 58-49.
The Colts got a boost from Sophomore Geronimo Sanchez and his 11 rebounds, 8 of which were on the defensive glass and Senior Mekhai Coleman who chipped in 9 rebounds of his own.
Kee and Senior Connor Moore both chipped in three shots apiece from behind the arc. Moore finished the night with 12 points for the Colts.
Freshman Bryce West threw in an extra 6 points and 2 assists in order to keep the ball rolling for the Colts. West has had a breakout first season and is already showing why he deserves his spot on Varsity.
The Colts didn’t stop when they crossed the half-court line either. The boys played tough defensive throughout the game with Kee and Coleman racking up 6 steals total.
The Colts are holding steady in the middle of the pack in the United8 Conference with a record of 4-4 and 7-9 overall.
