The Cape Fear Colts took home three back to back blowout victories extending their win streak and advancing to the second round of the playoffs.
On Friday the Colts demolished Grace Creek beating the Bears by 30 with a final score of 75-45. Coming off the win the colts played even better against the Douglas Byrd Eagles winning 78-33. On Thursday the Colts played their first conference tournament game against the 71st Falcons.
“Defensively we are focusing on our rotations in our zone defenses, boxing out, and communicating more on defense,” said Head Coach Brian Graham.
The Colts hosted the Grace Creek Bears for their senior night and they showed. Jayda Angel, Anija Jones, Teralyn Harris, and Kayia Starling each had a great game representing all the years of hard work for the Colts.
The Bears came out of the game with a chip on their shoulder playing tough and fast. The Colts came prepared for this playstyle and kept their composure and matched the intensity. The Colts took the lead and finished the quarter 12-10.
Cape Fear made the needed adjustments and started to pull the game away from the Bears. By this time Angel already had 6 assists. By the end of the half the Colts took a huge lead of 37-17.
“I continue to remind myself that I have to set the tone for defense and what I do is important because my team is going to follow my aggression,” said Harris.
Coming out of the half the Colts carried their momentum from the first half and scored the most points in any quarter of the game. Harris dominated the paint for the Colts with 6 rebounds, 5 steals, and 5 assists. With the Colts continued pressure on the ball, the quarter ended with a 63-30 lead for the Colts.
The seniors showed out all night combining for 36 rebounds, 14 assists, 23 steals, and 69 points for the game! The girls played like a well oiled machine, showing out for their final regular season home game. With the help of the seniors, the Colts took home a blowout victory winning 75-45.
“Playing beside one of the best players in the state inspires our team to work harder during practice and during games,” said Starling.
The Girls were back in action for the first round of the conference tournament Tuesday evening against the Eagles of Douglas Byrd.
The Colts dominated the Eagles from the start. Early foul trouble hurt the Eagles in the first 5 minutes of the game. This sent the Colts to the line early and often. Even through the physical play, the Colts took the lead 15-11. During the second the Colts took this lead and ran with it extending it to 42-20.
For the rest of the game the Colts continued to dominate the Eagles ending the third 69-30. Harris scored 12 on the night while sharing the wealth with 4 assists. The Colts took home another blowout victory ending the game 78-33.
The Colts then took on the Seventy-First Falcons in the semi-finals of the conference tournament on Thursday, leading to another blowout victory. The Colts started hot, playing more determined than ever to notch their second straight appearance in the conference tournament final. At the end of the 1st the Colts were up 21-11. The second was more of the same as the Colts ended the half leading 36-23.
Senior Kayia Starling showed out all night for the Colts, scoring 23 points on the night. The Colts cruised in the third, leading 59-39 heading into the final frame. The final result was the same as the Colts ended the game and beat the Falcons by 22, winning 76-54.
