The Colts Varsity Softball team had a big conference win on Friday night against the Purnell Swett Rams.
The Colts won in 6 innings by a score of 10-0 with Olivia Melvin in the circle. Melvin threw her first ever perfect game. This was also the first perfect game the Colts have had this season. She had 12 strikeouts in 6 innings, and the defense had her back by making some spectacular plays throughout the game.
“Switching from being a 1st baseman to the starting pitcher was definitely a big change for me. Knowing my defense has my back calms down my nerves a bit and pitching that perfect game felt really good,” said Melvin.
In the top of the 2nd inning, Avery Jones and Kloe Watts were able to get on base. Jaden Valdez was next in the line-up, knocking the ball straight to left field for an easy double, allowing both Jones and Watts to score.
“It felt really good to be able to score my teammates and get the game going. Putting us in the lead raised the team’s energy and we were able to carry that throughout the rest of the game. I have been working hard in practice and when I saw that change up, I knew I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to rip it,” said Valdez
Kayleigh Brewington was Melvin’s catcher for the game, and she has been working alongside her throughout her pitching journey.
“With Olivia picking pitching back up this year, she’s actually holding very well. She has worked hard in the bullpen almost everyday with Coach Dee Davis. Her pitching has come so far within only a few months and I can’t wait to see her improvement throughout the season,” said Brewington.
The Colts have three games this week against 71st, Northwood, and Douglas Byrd. They plan to come out with three wins for the week.
