Here at Cape Fear High School we are blessed with some of the best teachers and staff in the county. This week, our students have chosen Jarrod Britt. We are so lucky to have him working with us!

Mr Britt teaches Civic Literacy, AP US Government & Politics, and AP Research. Mr Britt has been teaching for 15 years and has been in Cumberland County for all of them. Before coming to Cape Fear, Mr Britt taught at Pine Forest High School through 2009-2019. He enjoyed his time there and left quite a few good friends to come here in the fall of 2019.

Mr. Britt is not only a teacher but also a coach. He has always loved the game of baseball. It has provided him with a lot of opportunities to meet and learn from some great people. At Pine Forest he coached football for three years and girls tennis for four years, all while coaching baseball in the spring.

The chance to work with young people and teach them about hard work, dedication, and how to compete has always intrigued Mr. Britt. He loves seeing an athlete work hard, get better, and win at something they didn’t think they could.

“I love learning about my students and establishing a relationship with them. Their personalities, quirks, and stories are what keep me excited about spending every day with them in the classroom,” says Britt.

Outside of the classroom Mr. Britt spends as much time as he can with his family. Coaching takes a lot of his time so when he is home he is a husband and dad, not Coach Britt. Him and his family spend a lot of time at church, watching his son play sports, and taking family trips to get away and go fishing.

Mr. Britt is a very creative person not only in the school building but also when he is at home. He loves to build things. “I am no master carpenter, but taking a piece of wood and turning it into a functional piece of furniture or making a shelf is one of the most satisfying things you can do,” says Mr. Britt.

Britt grew up in Columbus County; his mom and dad currently still live there. He has an older sister that lives in Clayton, North Carolina with her husband. Mr. Britt has been married for 13 years. He and his wife have a 7 year old son named Cole.

Mr. Britt attended UNC Pembroke from 2004-2007 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Social Studies Education. He then attended UNC Wilmington from 2008-2009 and graduated with a Masters in Education concentrated in history.

Mr. Britt teaching Civic Literacy offers great opportunities to get students excited about what’s happening in our country. Current events play heavily into Mr. Britt’s daily discussions. He also tries to help his students relate to what they’re discussing to their personal lives, as most of the material they cover will affect them somehow.

Many people know Mr Britt as the “Teacher on social media.” Mr. Britt started making TikToks during the COVID shutdown while he was teaching in front of a computer from his kitchen table. Not being able to interact with others on a daily basis was in his opinion the worst part of that whole ordeal, because that’s why he got into education. TikTok was the next best way to do that. It was an outlet Mr Britt could use to vent, share ideas with other teachers and coaches, and express himself through other hobbies, like cooking.

As busy as he is, Britt somehow finds time to be an avid fisherman. When he is not weighed down by his numerous responsibilities, you can find him at any number of secluded fishing holes around the east side of the river. He enjoys the peace of fishing and the thrill of catching a big largemouth bass.

“I love the quiet that fishing provides, “ said Britt. “I can spend hours thinking and reflecting and just listening to the sounds of nature. I also love to bring Cole with me; when he comes along it’s not quiet.”

Students have always enjoyed and respected Mr Britt. He treats them as his own and understands them as they are transferring to young adults. Mr Britt has made a serious impact on not only his students but his players. He never doubts them as he pushes them to be the best version of themselves.

Ever since the age of 10 Mr. Britt has wanted to be a teacher, now he wakes up everyday coming to his dream job!

We hope Mr. Britt will continue his teaching career with us at Cape Fear High School. He has made learning fun for students who have never expected it to be. The staff and students greatly appreciate him!
