Cape Fear Girl’s Soccer had three huge games this week. Despite an early loss, the Colts fought hard to go 2-1 on the week.
On Monday, the Colts hosted the Lee County Yellow Jackets leading to a hard fought loss. The Colts used this loss as a lesson for their games later on this week.
“I try to utilize my subs frequently to keep fresh legs. I also try to give my team a rest day when we have 3 game weeks,” said Head Coach Byan Pagan.
From the first whistle both teams played fast and efficiently. Lee county passed well and found gaps in the Colts defense, scoring three goals in the first half. On the other side Jayda Angel with her lightning fast speed blew past Lee County’s defense scoring for the Colts. The first half ended with a 3-1 lead for the Yellow Jackets.
“There wasn’t a lot of pressure my first time playing on varsity thanks to my team. I had a few good saves and rebounds, overall lee county was interesting,” said Sophomore Goalie Emma Parson.
The Colts defense made the right adjustments and were able to slow down the Yellow Jackets coming out of the half. Cape Fear showed out this half with being efficient throughout each aspect of the game. Emma Parson had a total of 8 saves this half keeping up her 8 saves per game average.
Although the Colts fought hard they were still unable to close the gap, making the final score 1-4 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.
The loss against Lee County was quickly forgotten by the Colts beating the Seventy- First Falcons 9-0. The Colts greatly improved their communication on the field and their defense during this game and it showed.
The Colts dominated the first half of the game scoring 9 goals and ending the game before it even got into the second half. It was a group effort for the Colts with Jayda Angel making 3 goals, Brooke Bombatepe scoring 4, Hanna Mcgill and Addison Gunter both scoring 1. The Colts defense was also on point with Kayleigh Jacobs having great clears and stopping multiple breakaways keeping the Falcons out of the game.
It was much of the same story for the Colts with another blow out victory ending the game in a mercy rule against the Eagles. The Colts have shown great improvement in the past two games mercy ruling both teams.
The Colts scored 9 unanswered goals repeating what happened in their previous game. Many players played out of position and proved they can play anywhere on the field and still shine. Key defensive players, AbbiKate Daughrty and Andi Brinker took the field on offense for the first time this season and were productive. Both scoring one goal a piece showing that they can play both sides of the ball, The Colts finished the first half with a 5-0 lead.
“As a defense player I loved having the opportunity to play a different position. It gave me a chance to score and try something new,” said Daughtry.
It was a different half but the story remained the same for the Colts who continued to dominate on offense and didn’t allow any room to breathe on defense. Bombatepe had a beautiful shot from the 50 yard line that went right over the goalies head to finish the game with another impressive 9-0 win over the Eagles.
The Colts had an amazing outing going 2-1 on the week. They continue to get better with every game and show no signs of slowing down.
