Cape Fear softball has been dominating the competition. They have mercy-ruled all opposing schools, bringing their winning streak to four games in a row.
The Colts started the week off against Purnell Swett with a 10-0 win. The win gave the Colts all the momentum they needed to stampede over their remaining opponents for the week.
The Colts quickly moved on to take the win 24-1 over Seventy-First. Olivia Melvin had pitched the first two innings, with Karalina Tomasic closed out the game in just the third inning. The team’s overall batting average of the game was 0.875.
The Colts then had a long road trip to Northwood, but made quick work of the Chargers and left the field 11-0. Olivia Melvin pitched another great game. Melvin also hit a homerun to keep the Colts going in the third inning. Gracey Horne went 4 for 4 at the plate, using her speed and laying down bunts.
On Tuesday, March 19th, Cape Fear went on the road to play at Jack Britt. The final score was 16-0 with a team batting average of .607. Allie Dawson, Kalilah Dela Cruz, and Kayleigh “Moose” Brewington led the team, all going 5 for 5.
Allie Dawson led off the game with a triple to deep left center, putting her in scoring position.
“I read my defense and utilized how hard the dirt was and chopped a few over the infield’s head along with some line drives,” said Dawson.
Alex Serbio came up behind Dawson with a single to left, scoring Dawson and putting the Colts in the lead.
Kalilah Dela Cruz had a sacrifice bunt in the second inning to advance runners, putting herself and Brewington into scoring position. Kloe Watts came in with an RBI and scored both baserunners.
Moose hit her first career home run, scoring two more runs for the Colts.
“It felt really good to finally hit it over. I kept barreling up balls and would send it deep into the outfield but they always ended up being caught. I was in shock and when I was trotting around the bases I saw how excited my teammates were for me. It’s great to have such a supportive team.”
Olivia Melvin held down Britt’s team with her pitching, only giving up two hits. The Colt’s defense was on fire and had her back.
The Colts went 4 for 4 on the week and put up a total of 61 runs. The Colts are now 3-1 in conference and 5-2 overall. They take on the Southview Tigers next and look to continue the streak.
