The baseball team continued to put in work throughout the break.
The Colts started the break against Roanoke Rapids in a fast paced and high scoring game. The Colts
Leading the team offensively was Junior Caden Jeffery, who went 2 for 3 on the night, scoring 2 runs of his own, and driving in 5 more. Senior Mason Hughes and Landon Underwood followed up both batting .500 on the night, bringing in a total of 3 runs and 4 RBI’s
On the opposite side of the inning, the Colts did well to prevent the Yellow Jackets from scoring. Ethan Colletti and Evan Bunce made easy work of every hit that came their way. Colletti held a fielding percentage of 100%, while Bunce went 8 for 9.
“I always put myself in the right position before the ball is even pitched to try and have the best chance of making the play,” said Colletti
Despite the Colts hard work and determination, Roanoke managed to find a hole in the defense, allowing them to score 10 runs in the 4 inning.
The Colts fought hard to get back in the running, but unfortunately the game ended 16-18 in favor of the Yellowjackets.
Despite this, the Colts remained positive and looked forward to getting a win against the Reidsville Rams. They would get exactly that.
Mason Hughes once again led the Colts offensively. At this point other teams are scared to pitch to him. Hughes was walked during two at bats, and was hit by a pitch during another. Despite this, Hughes still batted 1.000 on the night, bringing in 2 runs and 2 RBIs.
“I was seeing the ball very well, I was happy to get a home run against Roanoke Rapids. We played good baseball break, but it was nice getting a win after taking a lose a few days prior,” said Hughes
As soon as the break ended the Colts were right back into action against Conference rival Purnell Swett.
Junior super star Evan Bunce is hot at the plate, he currently is 2nd on the team in hits with 19. He contributed another hit on Tuesday night.
“Going into the Purnell game and us losing last time definitely made us go into the game with a lot more energy, which led me to make defensive plays and be productive at the plate,” said Bunce.
Junior Jackson Rainey had a stellar night offensively, going 2 for 3 at the plate, and bringing in 1 run and 1 RBI.
Defensively the Colts played their best game. Cape Fear shut down Purnell Swett and allowed 0 Hits on the night. Ethan Plesser threw 14 K’s and didn’t allow any of the Rams to touch a bag all night long.
“I made sure to get ample rest and eat a good pre-game meal. I just remembered all the work I’ve put in, and trust that on the mound” said Plesser.
The very next day the team traveled to Pine Forest successfully securing a win of 20-5. Coach Britt was a former assistant coach for 10 years, prior to coaching at Cape Fear.
Freshmen Landon Underwood went 3 for 4 on the night with a double, 2 singles, and 3 RBI’s. Underwood brings everything he has to the plate each time he steps up. He may be young but it’s hard to argue with the stat board.
“I changed my approach at bat and made sure to keep the energy the same every time no matter what,” said Underwood.
Senior Ethan Colletti shines at third basemen and continues to be a dependable veteran for the team.
“I can honestly say I’ve been in a slump but finally found a few decent barrels and got my groove back,” said Colleti.
The team takes on Seventy First Friday in hopes of securing a vital conference win against the falcons. Good luck boys!!
