CFNN Reporters: AbbiKate Daughtry, Emily Harris, & Ana Warchal

The Cape Fear Colts had their first match yesterday this past Tuesday, and it provided the young team with some valuable experience. After losing seven seniors last season, this season is the one where several new players are looking to step up for the team.

The Girls Golf team has 12 girls, and for ten of them, yesterday was their first match. The Lady Colts got their first look into what their season will look like and got to experience a Girls high school golf match.

The Lady Colts Shot 315 yesterday, combining scores from our qualifying Top 5; Abbey Bullard, Holli Bunce, Caroline Hales, Emily Harris, and  Abby Mckenzie. Their scores in same order; 109, 115, 107, 99, 112. The 315 was good for a 4th place finish in the match.

Sophomore Emily Harris, whose clutch shots for Cape Fear won her the lowest scorer for the Lady Colts, performed well in her first match ever. Her mentality through her 18 holes was to focus on the next shot and to limit her mistakes.

“I’m not going to let one mistake bring me down, just take the mistake and learn how to fix it next time,” said Harris. “It felt good being the top scorer.  People know it didn’t come to me easy, and it was nice to see that work pay off. The whole team has worked tirelessly this summer, and I can most definitely tell you that we will continue improving and work our way back to the top.”

Coach Todd Edge and the rest of the coaching staff have poured a lot of work and knowledge into these 12 girls. It will be rewarding to see the improvement and progress of each of the girls and watch the entire team soar.

“The team results weren’t in our favor yesterday, but we have six matches to rise to the top. On a good note, all our new golfers shot their personal best round on 18 holes. Caroline also shot a personal best. Now we know what it’s gonna take to be the best. I tell the girls all the time ‘hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.’ It’s time for us to get to work,” said Edge.

The Lady Colts conference includes Grays Creek, Purnell Swett,  Lumberton, Jack Britt, and South View. Grays Creek won yesterday’s match with a score of 292.

The Colts will have their next match at Pinecrest on Monday, September 9th at 2pm. Good Luck Ladies!!!
