For the second time this season the Cape Fear Cross Country team ran at home. On Wednesday, the Colts took to the course once again. This would be the last home meet for the rest of the season for the Colts, and they made sure to take advantage of the home course. After several personal records, the team proved their relentless drive to push their limits.

“We changed our strategy a little bit, the team was focused, the team was very goal driven and we saw a lot of positive successes come out from some of the changes we made. The boys for the second week in a row dominated with a perfect score. The girls faced a tough competitor, but they were able to hold on to a second place win through hard work and dedication,” said Coach Demchock.

This week, the Colts had 17 boys run, and they placed 1st out of 4, notching a perfect score of 15 for the second week in a row. Eight Colts placed in the top ten, sweeping the board. Chris Shick placed 1st, breaking 18 minutes for the first time this season with a time of 17:45. Collin Shick was next to finish, placing 2nd with a time of 18:03.  Seconds after Collin, Kayden Gillies finished 3rd with a time of 18:30. The Colts secured the top 5 spots, shutting the other teams out of the top.

“The team is full of positive energy, everyone jokes around a lot, but when it’s time to work they put in serious effort. It’s a group that keeps things light and fun even while pushing themselves. Being on this team has been an awesome experience, even if they’re always loud and chaotic and getting mad for immature reasons, it kinda brings the team together,” said Cohen Quintanilla, one of the 17 runners.

After the boys finished, the girls race started. The Colts had 9 girls run, and they placed 2nd with a score of 55. Lakin Clevidence was the first to finish, placing 6th with a time of 23:01. After Lakin, Amelia Osornio finished placing 9th with a time of 24:33. Kamiya was the next to finish for the Colts with a time of 26:00 and placed 12th.

“It went really well, I set a goal to beat the girl that’s been beating me since last year and I finally beat her. I broke my personal record and got faster each mile and we all did very well,” said Lakin.

All the runners did phenomenal in this race, with a ton of runners breaking their personal records and continuing to strive for greatness by putting in hard work throughout the week. The Colts keep getting better each race, showing just how much effort they have put in.

The Colts next race will be held at Gray Creek High School on Tuesday, September 17th at 4:30pm.
