The Cape Fear Women’s tennis team continues to smash their competition. This week, they took on the Grays Creek Bears, the Lumberton Pirates, and the Overhills Jaguars, resulting in 7-2, 9-0 and 9-0 wins, respectively. The ladies are building up an exceptional record as they prepare for the regionals and playoff season in the next month!
On Monday, the Colts went Bear hunting, resulting in a strong 7-2 score. Shea Bieniek (sr) made light work on court one, winning 6-2 6-1. Andi Brinker (sr) kept her opponent low, with a score of 6-1 6-1. Brianna Keen (sr) held her own on third court, winning 6-0 6-3. Dani Fick (jr) battled for her first set win, then crushed the competition on her second set, resulting in a 7-6 6-3 score. Olivia Arnette (sr) persevered through losing her first set 4-6 and came back swinging, winning her second set 7-6 and the tiebreaker 10-6. Sophia Bullard (jr) fought hard, but lost 5-7 4-6.
“I just play to my strengths and don’t go down to my opponents level,” Bieniek responded in reference to her consistent wins and tough defens.
On court one doubles, Bieniek and Brinker viciously trapped the Bears, winning 8-1. On court two doubles, Keen and Fick volleyed and rallied their way to an 8-0 win. On court three doubles, Arnette and Bullard battled, but came up short, losing 4-8 to the Bears.
On Wednesday, the ladies beat the Lumberton Lady Pirates 9-0. Bieniek gave her opponent nothing but goose eggs, winning 6-0 6-0. As for court two and three, Brinker and Keen both beat their girls 6-0 6-1. Fick struggled in the first set, keeping it close at 7-5, but pulled out the second set with a 6-0 score. Arnette took the victory handedly, winning 6-3 6-0. Bullard did well, beating her opponent 6-3 6-4.
Court one doubles didn’t mess around, Bieniek and Brinker won 8-1. Court two doubles handled their own, Keen and Arnette beat their opponents 8-2. Court three doubles, Fick and Bullard, finished with the same score as court two, 8-2.
On Thursday, the Lady Colts absolutely dominated their matches against the Overhills Lady Jaguars, winning 9-0. Bieniek was quick with it again, winning 6-0 6-0. Brinker won 6-1 6-0 and Keen defeated her opponent 6-0 6-0. Fick was fierce, winning 6-1 6-3, and Arnette kept her opponent low with a 6-2 6-2 score. Bullard closed it out for the singles matches, winning 6-1 6-1.
“I think we have been doing really well, we just need to keep pushing one another to be better and make sure that we aren’t getting too comfortable,” said Brinker.
As for doubles, court one defeated their opponents 8-0 and court two won 8-1. On court three doubles, Bullard was subbed in for sophomore Alissa Fulghum, and her and Fick walked away with an 8-4 score.
Great job this week ladies! Your Lady Colts tennis team is now holding a record of 12-1, and will face Purnell Swett, Overhills, and Clinton next week. The Thursday match against Clinton will be senior night for your Lady Colts, so come on out and show your support!
