On Thursday, September 27th, the Cape Fear Colts clashed with the Purnell Swett Rams. It didn’t take very long at the start of the game to realize that this was going to be a “lights out” night for the Colts, and no rain was going to stop their momentum.
The opening kickoff for the Rams went out of bounds. That pretty much summed up the night for the Rams. The Colts took the ball at the 35 then drove down the field. King Faison capped off the drive with a touchdown run. The second touchdown was a 9-yard run by Tai Phillipps. Ending the first quarter up 14 points on the Rams was a nice spot to be in, but the Colts knew they had plenty more to show.
The Colts headed into the second quarter still focused on capitalizing on Ram errors. Fransisco Rodriguez made the score 17-0 with a 30-yard field goal. The Rams earned some yards in the second quarter, however. The Ram quarterback Raymond Cummings scrambled for some yards, but still couldn’t put any numbers up on the board, leaving the Colts headed into the second half with a clean sheet against Purnell Swett.
The Colts defense was unstoppable during the second half, as they demonstrated a masterclass in power football. Sam Linebacker Bryan Charles was a force of nature with 8 tackles and 3 tackles for loss. Middle Linebacker Will Wicklin also dominated with 7 tackles and 4 tackles for loss. Senior Defensive End Marquan Footman, coming off a 2-game absence due to injury, prevailed with 3 tackles and a sack. The Colts, stronger than a wall of steel, refused to let the herd through to the end zone.
“I felt really good going into the game. It’s different when you’ve been out for two weeks and it’s a whole different mindset. All or nothing,” said senior Marquan Footman.
The Colts were unleashed and weren’t stopping anytime soon. The Colt’s offense was so aggressive they resulted in three touchdowns by the end of the third quarter. The first touchdown was by King Fasion with a 15-yard run and a kick to get the extra point. Then Tai Phillips with a 1-yard run into the endzone which gave the Colts another 7 on the board. Bryan Charles got the last touchdown of the game with a fumble recovery in the end zone finalizing the score at 38-0.
“I think my contribution on offense was scoring some touchdowns. We were running on the ground a lot so I had a lot of chances to make something happen, and when I got the chances, I took it and scored twice. On defense I was trying to keep my side locked down so we didn’t give them any points,” reflected Tai Phillips.
The Colts are on a roll and will be back on Friday playing against 71st High School, the Colts biggest game of the season. The “Battle for the 910.” They’re coming in hungry and ready to win to continue their winning streak. We want the Colt fans to be loud and proud October 4th at 7:30 as we watch the 4th ranked 71st Falcons take on our 8th ranked Cape Fear Colts. Be sure to come out and support the team!
