Has reading and writing never been your favorite activity because you never knew where to begin? Our Teacher of the Week, Mrs. Amy Lucas can help lead you in the right direction! Mrs. Lucas is loved by so many people at Cape Fear for her dedication and eagerness to see her students grow and succeed!
Mrs. Lucas has always taught on the east side of the river. She started off her teaching career at Mac Williams Middle School where she taught for seven years and then made the trek across the parking lot to Cape Fear, where she has been ever since! Mrs. Lucas has been teaching for a total of 15 years. In the past, she taught AP Lang and English 2 Honors, but this year she is only teaching English 2 Honors.
Mrs. Lucas believes that the transition from teaching AP Lang and English 2 Honors last year to only teaching English 2 Honors this year gives her an easier workload. Although she loves teaching AP Lang, it has been easier for her to take care of her family and be able to truly live in the moment with her kids since they are young and growing up fast! She does believe that in the future she will teach Lang again, but it will have to be when her kids are older.
“I love being able to see my students grow especially in their reading and writing skills,” expressed Mrs. Lucas.
There are so many ways within Mrs. Lucas’ way of teaching that has helped her students not only grow their writing skills, but as people. She has always been a hands on teacher and has a way of teaching that really sticks with her students.
“Amy Lucas shaped my mind in many different ways. From constructed responses to power words, I am a far better writer and student than I ever thought I could be. She is my queen,” exclaimed Mrs. Lucas’s former student Abby Cook.
Mrs. Lucas grew up in Fayetteville. She attended Seventy-First High School where she graduated from in 2002. After high school, she attended The University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she was involved in their 5 year program. She graduated with her Masters in 2007 and in 2009 with her bachelor’s degree.
“In a way I knew I always wanted to be a teacher, but I didn’t always know what grade I wanted to teach,” Mrs. Lucas explained.
During college Mrs. Lucas expressed that she originally wanted to work in elementary education, but she quickly realized that she wanted to work with the older generations. She wanted to be able to share her love for reading with older students so she could create a spark within them and help them grow as writers just like her teachers had done for her.
Mrs. Lucas has been married for eight years to Cape Fear’s very own AP & AIG Coordinator, Mr. Lucas. Mrs. Lucas loves getting to work with him because he is her best friend! She appreciates being able to share ideas with him and spending time with him in general. Together they have two children, Jack who is six and Claire who is four years old.
Mrs. Lucas is the ultimate mom! She loves being able to spend time with her family because they are her whole world. Mrs. Lucas also loves to be outdoors and soak up the sun, but when she is not outside she enjoys cooking and is, obviously, an avid reader!
Mrs. Lucas has brought so much optimism to the English department here at Cape Fear! She loves engaging with her students and helping them grow in and out of the classroom. Mrs. Lucas is loved by not only all of her students but the faculty and staff as well, which is why she is this week’s Teacher of the Week!
