CFNN Reporters: Brianna Keen and Allie Dawson
This week, your Lady Colts tennis team won their last regular season match and played in the United Eight Conference Tournament. Seniors Shea Bieniek and senior Andi Brinker have secured their spot at regionals for doubles, and senior Brianna Keen and junior Dani Fick have secured their spots in singles.
On Monday night, the Cape Fear Colts played a double header against the Clinton Dark Horses, resulting in an incredible 9-0 9-0 win. The ladies had a long night, playing singles, then doubles, then doing it all over again. Both of the singles matches were played as an eight game pro set to speed things up. Shea Bieniek quickly won her first matches 8-0 8-0. Andi Brinker beat her opponent swiftly 8-1 8-0. Brianna Keen dominated her matches, winning 8-1 8-0. Dani Fick only played the second singles match, winning 8-2. Senior Olivia Arnette kept her opponents low with an 8-3 8-0 score. Junior Hailey Ross battled hard and won her matches 8-4 8-1. Sophomore Alissa Fulghum moved up to six in the first singles match and won 8-4.
Bieniek and Brinker once again smacked the competition, with a doubles score of 8-1 8-1. Keen and Arnette won their first doubles match efficiently with an 8-2 score. In the second doubles match, Keen and Fick defeated their opponents 8-3. For the first doubles match on court three, Ross and Fulghum handed out goose eggs, winning 8-0. In the second, Arnette and Ross won their match with an excellent 8-2 score.
On Wednesday, Bieniek, Brinker, Keen, Fick, and Arnette competed against Douglas Byrd to secure spots for regionals. Both Keen and Fick had a bye the first round. Bieniek and Brinker won their match 8-0, making them the number one doubles team in the conference. Olivia Arnette beat her Douglas Byrd opponent 6-0 6-0. Keen played the opponent Arnette had beaten and won that match 6-0 6-0. Arnette and Fick battled for the second spot at regionals for singles. After a long and impressive night of forty to fifty ball rallies, Fick won the battle 6-1 6-2. We are beyond proud of our regional qualifiers. Great job ladies!
Next week will consist mostly of practice, since playoffs have been shifted back a week due to the teams in the more western part of the state who have been affected by Hurricane Helene. On Friday, the girls will head up to Burlington, NC to compete in the first round of regionals. Good luck Colts!
