Head Coach
With winter sport approaching at Cape Fear High School, many are wondering what the men’s basketball team will show in this upcoming season with a new head coach in Rico Mitchell.
2023 Season Standings
Last season was a little disappointing for the team as they finished with a regular season record of 9-15. They did not make the playoffs and ended the season with a 17 point loss to Southview.
Key Returners
Coach Mitchell is looking to turn it around this season. Returners such as senior Point guard Damien Gary and junior power forward Geronimo Sanchez. The Colts also have Chosen Wynn returning who mainly played JV last year, but made a few appearances on the varsity team last year. Chosen is also a key player on the football team. However, all three will not be able to return to basketball until the football season is over, as they are key players on both teams.
Promising Newcomers
There are a few promising players coming up from the junior varsity team such as sophomore Josh Green point guard, Junior point guard Juelz Williams, and Sophomore forward Dy’lan Parker. Josh and Juelz provide extra ball handling and scoring the team needs after having a turnover issue last season. Dy’lan provides extra hustle and that “Go get it” mentality, always swarming the ball.
Outlook from the Coach and Players
Coach Mitchell expects big things from the team this season. His expectation is, “To fight and be in the hunt for a conference championship. I think we have a real chance at making that happen this year.”
Key returner Chosen Wynn says, “I am excited for the season and can’t wait to see how it goes especially because I will play a bigger role in the team this year.”
We look forward to the season and the excitement Coach Mitchell brings to the court and to the community!
