The volleyball team finished their season last week after making an impressively (but not unexpected) deep playoff run.
After a solid season in what was expected to be a rebuilding season for Cape Fear, the ladies instead, reloaded, finishing 2nd in the U8 Conference with a record of 12-2, and an overall regular season record of 18-8.
The Colts playoff run started with their first round match against Currituck High School at home. Our Colts swept the Knights in a short three sets, 25-20, 25-23, and 25-11.
The last game made sure that the Colts’ season would continue, setting up a 2nd round match against the Harnett Central Trojans. The Colts once again beat the Trojans in four sets, 25-12, 15-25, 25-22, and 25-22. The Colts displayed good coverage, solid serves, and service receiving The Colts were especially tough in their hard working mindsets.
On Saturday the Colts traveled to J.H. Rose High to take on the #1 seed. Cape Fear was the #12 seed in the 3A East Division. The Colts fought hard but came up short in 3 sets, 17-25, 22-25, and 21-25, unfortunately ending their season.
Although the loss to Rose ended the season, the team and coaching staff considered the season as a whole a big success. As stated, most expected the Colts to flounder in the middle of the pack, but not this team. The girls proved without a doubt that Cape Fear Volleyball is a true program with a winning culture, and that culture is not going anywhere anytime in the near future.
“I think we had a very strong game against Rose. After getting used to the rhythm in the first set, we quickly picked things up the 2nd and 3rd sets. Even though we came up short, I think we definitely shocked most people,” said Outside Hitter Claudia McDaniel. “We had a hard fought season, even winning games that were unexpected. I think overall we had a wonderful season, no matter the wins or losses. I can’t wait to come back next year to cheer on my old teammates from the bleachers.”
Although the loss stings a little, the Colts still have an eye on the future and this team’s potential going forward.
“We fought hard, and the loss is difficult to accept, but this year was focused on growth and the bonds we made as a team which are more important than winning. Overall, I believe this season was successful and we surprised many people,” said Right Side Player Abi Royal. “[It is] sad to say I will be cheering on the Colts from the bleachers instead of the court next year. Saying goodbye to what brought me the most amazing last four years of my life and all of the people that were a part of it will always be tough; wishing the best of luck to CF Volleyball. I love y’all.”
The Colts finished the season with an impressive 20-8 record. We could not be more proud of the progress the Lady Colts have made to rebuild their team while still winning games in the process. We are looking forward to seeing what happens with the Colts as they continue their legacy of being in the playoffs 9 years in a row. See you next year!
