The Cape Fear swim team splashed back into the season with their first meet at Fayetteville State University on Wednesday December 4th. The Colts went against 4 other teams with both girls and boys placing 2nd and 2nd overall. With a few meets ahead before the conference meet, we can’t wait to see the Colts continue to progress throughout the season.
“The team did a great job at the meet showing great sportsmanship and support for the underclassmen. It was a huge learning experience for all of the first year swimmers. The main focus of improvement will be on underwater streamlining and turns. Lots of ground was lost during those moments,” said head coach Zachary Woolard.
In event 15, the Girls’ 500-yard freestyle, the Colts went back-to-back 1st and 2nd place. Anamarie Brenes secured the win with a 6:43 and soon after Katelyn Bowers finished 2nd with a 7:26. They both fought off the 2 Buccaneer swimmers, not letting them surpass them and getting the top spots, earning the team 37 points for the girls team.
The last event for the girls was event 23, the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Lady Colts finished the meet strong, placing 1st in the event. The relay consisted of Lainey Williams, Dani Fick, Amelia Osornio, and Anamarie Bernes. They all finished hard and had a time of 5:03. They finished 26 seconds before the next team, easily gaining 40 points.
“We did an amazing job at the meet, especially the new swimmers. This gave us an amazing opportunity to see how we can improve as a team, also I’m very proud of everyone,” said captain Anamarie Brenes.
In event 22, the Boys 100-yard breaststroke, 2 of the team’s new swimmers placed, with Landon Anderson placing 3rd with a time of 1:42 and Isaak Fick who finished just 4 seconds later, placing 5th with a time of 1:46. With this meet being their first ever meet, they made it seem as if they’ve been swimming for years. They will keep working hard at practice to improve their skills in the water.
In the last event of the day, the Boys 400 medley relay, the Colts placed 3rd with a time of 4:44 and scored 32 points. The relay was composed of Mason Hancock, Brandon Patton, Evan Smith, and Nick Serbio. This event wrapped up the meet where all the swimmers did a phenomenal job.
“We have a very young team and I believe their potential was shown yesterday. Now we just have to work on tapping into their potential,” said captain Mascon Hancock.
The girls team had a total of 298 and the boys had a total of 311, ending with a combined score of 609. They fell just short of 1st but will be back next week to take another stab at 1st place. The next meet will be held at Fayetteville State University on Wednesday December 11th.
