As we start off the beginning of our second semester at Cape Fear High School, we honor our first Student of the Week: Reuben Hogan.

Reuben was born in Fayetteville, but grew up in Roseboro. Though he moved to Roseboro, he stayed with his cousins due to his father’s job.

He has had a fun childhood, and he is the middle child with his two brothers and two sisters.

“My childhood was very interesting and eventful. I moved a total of 5 times, and since my dad did security and was on the road a lot, I spent a lot of time with my cousins,” said Reuben.

Unlike any other students, he has earned the title of Student of the Week by being a young student-athlete who has been a leader to those around him, being dedicated to his work ever since he stepped foot in CFHS, and by also taking part in other extracurricular activities throughout the school.

“He was always focused and showed a high level of engagement with course material,” explained Mrs. Lucas.

Teachers that have taught Reuben in Cape Fear all agree that he is a hard worker and that if he didn’t understand something or wasn’t as good they saw that he wanted to be on top of things and succeed.

“First, I just focus on my school work because getting good grades, that is my main goal right now: focus on good grades so that I can play sports, because sports is second. Like a student, then an athlete,” says Reuben.

Highlighting his athletic side, Reuben participated in Junior Varsity Football. He played both Wide Receiver and Defensive Back. He also runs for both of our track teams where he does events such as 55m dash, 300m dash, and 500m dash for indoor track and for outdoor track he does the 200m dash, 400m dash, and the 4 by 4 relay.

Reuben explained, “I believe my high energy gives off a good motivational vibe for my teammates,” and his teammates agree with this, saying that he keeps them motivated and drives them to succeed throughout the season.

Reuben’s coaches think one of his biggest strengths is that he is committed. They also say he holds other players accountable. One coach explained, “Reuben is a great leader for his age, whether it’s being first to do a drill or helping someone out, he shows great leadership despite being an underclassmen.”

“The jump from being a freshman to a sophomore has been too easy with my work getting more challenging by the year, I have stayed focused and determined to keep up my good grades,” said Hogan.

This shows Reuben’s ability to adjust and adapt as things change, especially as he grows and moves through high school.

With a desire to attend the University of California, in Los Angeles, Reuben wants to study Law & Justice, attempting to earn his Majors Degree. This demonstrates his belief of shooting for the stars and wanting to make sure he can do what he thinks will be better for the future.

Reuben would like to become an Olympic Runner after his time at UCLA.

“I’ve been running track ever since I was little and I have enjoyed it more and more every year,” he said.

He believes that in ten years he could be one of the best track runners in the world.

He has shown his love and care, whether it be helping his classmates with the things they don’t understand, helping his teammates become the best and or better version of themselves, or later in his life where he plans to inspire millions of people through his love for track & field.

In every aspect of his life, Reuben Hogan exemplifies what it means to be a well-rounded and dedicated individual. From his academic achievements and passion for athletics to his leadership roles, Reuben has proven himself to be an exemplary student and a positive influence on those around him.

As he chases his dream of a future at UCLA and beyond, there is no doubt that Reuben will continue to succeed and inspire others with his hard work, determination, and generosity.
