Splashing, kicking, and performing his way into our hearts, Isaak Fick has been given the honor and opportunity to be the student of the week from Jan 20th through the 27th.
This week we are looking into a grade in high school that is assumed to have it easy, Freshman, and who better could show the hardships of freshman year than Isaak.
In only his first year of high school, Isaak has done more than the average freshman. From playing soccer, to being on the swim team while also being a part of the Cape Fear bands and ensembles, Isaak shows more Colt pride than anyone.
Isaak Fick was born and raised in North Carolina, growing up as the youngest child of four, he explains that he gets along with his siblings from time to time, regardless, he spends a lot of time with them, and enjoys going on hikes and to the beach frequently with them.
“Being outside and in nature, I personally enjoy it because it makes me feel free and I have no restrictions and I can have fun as I want. The beach I love the water and I like going out swimming there, sometimes surfing,” says Fick.
Outside of school, sports, and extracurriculars, Fick spends his time on Saturday nights cooking with his family, and waking up on Sunday mornings to go to church, being in a Youth group, he finds a way to put forth a helping hand with his pastor.
Isaak believes that everyone deserves a chance and that you should make sure that you have fun no matter what you’re doing. He says that he hasn’t had a problem with that so far during his time at Cape Fear.
One of his teachers, Ms. Starling, has said, “Isaak enriched the class.” She believes that he is a hard working student, and she also says that he always participates in class.
When it comes to Isaak’s studies, he puts them first, above anything else. Just like Ms. Starling, one of his other teachers, Mrs. Holden said, “Isaak always did his work, he always made sure everything was done on time, and he did well because of that.”
Both of these teachers believe that Fick made the classroom a better atmosphere all together. This shows how the energy that he brings to the school, and his actions around and towards others, really affects peoples day in a positive way.
The same is to say for Fick’s extracurricular activities, from band, to swimming, to soccer, some have said that his energy is absolutely unmatched.
During the fall, the clash of activities arose for Fick, but he found his way to persevere, having both marching band and soccer practices after school, one ending at 6 pm, and the other ending at 7. Fick stayed resilient until the end of both seasons.
For these activities, Fick has explained what he liked the most about them. For band, he enjoys the competitions, the places he gets to go to, and performing, as well as spending time with his friends.
“His personality and work ethic is one that is very conducive and beneficial to a team environment. His individual strengths also help emphasize the previous statement,” says Band director, Matthew Jorgensen.
For soccer, he enjoys being in the games and competitions, he says he enjoys the “real life experience of playing.” Even during the season he would keep his skills up by practicing in his backyard, even though he is in his backyard he says “The more I do it, the more enjoyable it gets.”
Other than soccer and band, Fick loves to play water polo at his swim practices, he enjoys swimming because of the competitions and his talent being shown off.
Most of these activities have proved and shown Isaak puts his kindness and showmanship forward, he believes in the golden rule with anything, you should treat others how you want to be treated.
“Isaak is a really nice and smart person, that is really joyful, and that will push you to do better.” said his dear friend and bandmate, Legend Hood, this just shows how his golden rule has been his top motto to go by.
With his friends and teachers highlighting what type of person Isaak is, Isaak himself has his big dreams ahead after high school, by already having his idea of what he would like to do in college.
Another one of Isaak’s hobbies is engineering, he shares a huge love for the task, his own family has even bought him building kits, to take apart and put back together again, which he enjoys doing.
Fick wants to attend North Carolina State University, where he will major in engineering, he says, “I know that it’s gonna be difficult because they are a big engineering college but I hope to get there,” he also wants to play soccer and continue that passion during his time in college.
He plans on achieving his goal of graduating from NC state with a PHD in engineering. His passion for engineering has him striving for the next few years after college where he is working a job dealing with engineering and is happy, doing what he loves.
A student who works hard no matter if it’s school, band, soccer, or swimming and makes sure to show it. A student who loves his family time as much as friends in his life, and a student who is optimistic and positive as well.
Isaak Fick is one of the best examples to show that many freshman students have their lives busy and yet keep the endurance to strive through their first years of high school.
