CFNN reporters: Lilly Jordan and Contessa Williams
The athlete of the week reporters are here to keep you in the know about the star athletes Cape Fear has to offer. This week’s female Athlete of the Week is Naara Peralta, who is breaking barriers and setting new standards in the world of highschool wrestling.
Naara’s journey in sports has been nothing short of inspiring, which was a major factor in her being named CFNN’s female Athlete of the Week. Naara’s passion for wrestling began in the 6th grade at Mac Williams Middle School, where she first laced up her wrestling shoes. She instantly fell in love with the sport, and found quick success. Her athletic prowess didn’t stop there; she also played football for two years, participated in track for one year, and started playing soccer in the 8th grade, all at Mac Williams Middle School. Naara’s dedication to wrestling extended beyond school programs, though, as she joined a club wrestling program to hone her skills further.
Her commitment to excellence is also evident in her participation in Cape Fear’s JROTC program, where she demonstrates leadership and discipline. The inspiration behind Naara’s wrestling journey comes from her uncle, who has been a significant influence in her life. However, her biggest supporter is her mom, who stands by her side, cheering her on every step of the way.
“My mom has been my rock, and has supported me in every way possible,” Naara said.
Peralta’s mom has been a huge source of support for her throughout her athletic career, regardless of which sport she decided to take up.
Outside of school, Naara’s life revolves around practicing her sports and maintaining a rigorous workout routine. Before any competition, Naara follows a pregame routine that keeps her grounded and focused. She begins by praying and listening to Christian music to calm her nerves, then visualizes the moves she plans to execute on the mat. Some of her favorite gospel songs are “Gratitude” and “Reckless Love.”
“My prayer always starts off with: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” Peralta shares.
Balancing school and sports is no easy task, but Naara manages it by dedicating school hours to her academic work, allowing her to concentrate on sports after school. Being a female athlete in a predominantly male field comes with its challenges, but Naara handles the pressure with grace. She knows that her hard work is worth it and hopes to inspire other girls who look up to her. Though she tries to be an inspiration for others, Peralta shares she also has inspirations of her own, including one of her coaches, coach Rob.
“She was always one to work the extra mile, and prove that she deserved to be on the field,” coach Rob shares.
Her biggest accomplishments in wrestling include winning the WRAL tournament, a feat no girl at Cape Fear High School had achieved before, and then clinching another tournament victory shortly after. Naara’s motivation stems from her positive outlook on life and her strong faith, which helps her navigate through any struggles. Her story is a testament to her resilience, determination, and the unwavering support of her family and faith.
As Cape Fear High School’s Athlete of the Week, Naara Peralta continues to break barriers and set new standards for future generations of athletes. Cape Fear is lucky to have such an inspiring and dedicated athlete. Stay tuned in next week to see CFNN’s next Athlete of the Week feature!
