Our Exceptional Student of the Week is Christian Garcia! Christian is a Senior here at Cape Fear and grew up in Cedar Creek with his younger brother who is a freshman.
Christian’s favorite things to do are watching tv and listening to music. He loves watching anime as well as Peppa Pig. His favorite song is “Poison” from “The Has Been Hotel” television series. When Christian isn’t watching his favorite shows, he really enjoys drawing. He loves to draw all sorts of animals and monsters.
Although Christian doesn’t have a favorite subject, he loves to be in class and is really interested in dinosaurs and all sorts of prehistoric creatures. Christian is a smart kid who keeps to himself, and is always excited to learn new things.
“Christian is very independent and helpful towards his classmates and teachers. He is smart and he loves to draw and color. He is caring, but he doesn’t want you to know his softer side,” said Coach Brian Graham.
Christian is a huge fan of Chinese food, and his favorite place to eat is China Garden. He is very excited to graduate from high school in June, and after graduation he is excited to “go solo” and live the adult life.
“Difference doesn’t mean wrong or incapable, just a unique perspective of the world. Growing up with him was hard to see him face the challenges against cancer but one thing that will always be true is that he’s a fighter and resilient when it comes to hardships. He may not always understand all the time of what’s going on but he’s capable of proving others wrong and showing he’s not weak or afraid to stand out and show people around him that he is special in many more ways than one,” said Christians younger brother Oscar when asked about growing up with Christian.
Growing up, Christian was always very tall and strong, but spent most of his time by himself. Even before he was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer in his leg he always seemed like a “lone wolf” and wasn’t much of a people person. He’s always enjoyed staying home and keeping to himself.
“I didn’t get to bond with my brother normally like others do due to when he got cancer he had to spend what felt like a lifetime in UNC chapel hill hospital for months to a year and more to be carefully watched and taken care of by the best in NC and my mom would go and stay while my dad stayed home to watch me and my sisters” said Oscar Garcia.
His family would pray everyday that he would come back home and that things could be normal again. Christian fought hard for his life for almost a year, and he ultimately won the battle. He was able to go home to his family and be a normal kid again.
Christian’s story can be a reminder to all of us that no matter if we fall to the ground, do badly on a test or feel afraid, do not give up and keep fighting and overcome our trials like Christian Garcia did.
