The Cape Fear Softball team traveled to Lumberton Tuesday night for the first conference game of the season. The ladies were well-prepared for the game and scored early and often, thumping Lumberton 18-1 on the night. The Colts are officially 1-0 in the United 8 Conference and 3-0 overall.

Coming off the previous week where the Colts had two wins against Triton and St. Pauls, the team knew exactly what they needed to secure the win.

The ladies came out strong in the top of the first, scoring 6.

“I’m glad I have confidence in every single one of my teammates to get the rally going. We need the rally to start at the beginning of all our games, because once we get started we can’t be stopped,” said Freshman First Baseman Peyton Eason.

Not only were the bats on fire, but the defense stayed strong throughout the whole game. Junior Karalina Tomasic was back on the mound with a mission, only allowing three hits while striking out three and walking none.

The second inning was scoreless for both teams, but that didn’t stop the Colts from finding their momentum again.

In the top of the third, the ladies managed to put a whopping 12 runs on the board. The Colts had timely hits and read the defense well, which allowed them to score so many runs.

Senior Elon commit Allie Dawson was 3 for 4 on the night with a double and 4 RBIs. Tomasic went 2 for 3 at the plate, also with a double and 4 RBIs. Senior outfielder Kalilah DeLaCruz went 1 for 2 with a double and 3 RBIs. All together, the Colts had 14 hits as a team.

A key part of the game that the Lady Colts have picked up on fast is the vital  bond that they have with their teammates and the attitude as well as effort they bring to the game. It has truly had a major effect on the entire team.

“Even if you get out, you’ll have another chance, let it go and pick your other teammates,” said Junior Amari Adams as she gave the team a speech before the game.

The Lady Colts have two more games this week. They will be on the road again Thursday night at North Johnston and will finish up the week with another conference game, home against Purnell Swett. As of right now, the JV softball team will play their first game Friday night at 4:30.
