This past Monday March 3rd, the Cape Fear Boys Golf Team was back on the course starting their season. The team travelled to Pinecrest Country Club. They were definitely in the right frame of mind, as they won the match with a team score of 327, which bested the five other teams at the match.

Top scorers for the match were Landen Kersey with a 78, Tyler Eavenson with an 85, Layton Lucas with an 85, Ashton Leonard with a 79, Jacob Fisher with an 86 and alternate Mason Hancock with a 94.

“Yesterday was a good day on the course for the team and myself as we got the win and I shot 78 for third in the conference. Hope to continue that momentum into next week at Baywood,” stated Kersey.

This year, the Colts return three all conference golfers: Tyler Eavenson, Landen Kersey and Jacob Fisher.

“The team did really well, the team is much improved from last year and we hope to win another conference championship.” mentioned Eavenson.

Mason Hancock, Bryson Barlow, Layton Lucas, Ashton Leonard and Micheal Longhany will also be swinging it back to the course for this season.

Last season, the Colts averaged 346.9 strokes per match and 39.0 total points. This was good for a United 8 Conference title, which the team hopes to repeat this season.

Head Coach Todd Edge was named Coach of the Year last season, and he will be returning for this season; however, his journey will be coming to an end after this season.

“Overall, the team played well with the greens being harder than expected. It was a good season opener for us and I think we will do amazing this season. We have a lot of really good golfers and an injured player who is still putting in the work to

get better. We will have a great season this year,” said freshman Ashton Leonard.

The Lumberton Pirates placed 2nd with a team score of 353 followed by Gray’s Creek with a team score of 354 who placed 3rd.

The boys’ hard work on and off the course led them to place 1st and to a solid victory to open the season! The boys hope to achieve another 1st place finish in the conference and become conference champions once again. There is no doubt that our fellow athletes will continue to strive and get “par!”

The Colts will be back at their home course at Baywood Golf Course today in hopes to win another conference match. Make sure to be there and cheer on your Colts!
