The Cape Fear Girls Lacrosse Team kicked off their season at home against Pinecrest on Monday, March 3rd. The team returns several key players from last year’s roster, and the girls were eager to build on the skills and experience they gained from last season. They were determined to put their hard work in practice to the test and improve their overall game as they looked forward to the season ahead.

While the Colts were able to maintain composure and fight through tough situations, they struggled to generate shots on goal. Despite numerous attempts to break through Pinecrest’s defense, Cape Fear was unable to find the back of the net. The Pinecrest goalkeeper blocked several close-range shots and ended any momentum the Colts tried to build.

“I’m a little disappointed in how we played as a team, but I believe everything is a learning experience. Our next game is our ‘Super Bowl’ against Jack Britt, and we’re determined to come back 10 time better,” said Senior offensive starter Savannah Thornall.

Despite the challenging loss, there were several bright spots for the Colts. The team’s defensive effort was commendable, with players continually giving their best to slow down Pinecrest’s offense. Key defenders like Jordan Dean and Rebecca Scantlin kept the Patriots offense on their toes. The Colts starting goalkeeper, Susan Pate, made numerous stops and worked hard to keep the score from climbing higher.

“Our heads weren’t fully in the game; the lack of communication is what sold us against Pinecrest. Our next game is March 17th against Jack Britt and we’re going to sink the ship,” said Captain and Senior defensive starter Jenny Jones.

Aideen Roberg was named Player of the Game after dominating the field with relentless energy all 4 quarters. She totaled 5 ground balls and 5 shots on goal against Pinecrest. Roberg led the Colts on draws this past game with 5 draw controls. Although the team faced a loss, her drive and outstanding performance on the field made her a deserving player, showcasing her dedication and skills in every play.

The game also provided valuable lessons. It was clear that the team needs to focus on developing their offensive strategies and shooting accuracy. With more practice and experience, they can improve their ability to create scoring opportunities and break down tough defenses.

Looking ahead, the Colts are determined to bounce back and use this loss as motivation to grow stronger as a team. The season is long, and they know that there will be more opportunities to showcase their skills and make improvements. With many returning players and a shared commitment to improvement, the Cape Fear Girls Lacrosse team is ready to continue pushing forward and aiming for greater success as the season progresses.
