On March 8th, the Colts Girls Soccer Team traveled to Wilson, NC to play in the Annual Brittney Soccer Scholarship Showcase. The girls faced an intense matchup and a tough opponent in Ledford Girls Soccer from Thomasville, NC. The Colts were able to rise to the occasion, picking up a 3-0 and adding another win to the season total. It was a memorable experience for everyone on the team, not just putting a win in the column, but playing for an important cause.
Seniors Andi Brinker and Mallory Cavey, along with Junior Alexis Young lit up the board for the Colts with goals. Brinker opened the scoring in the match with a firm strike to the upper 90 past a diving goalkeeper. The goal would carry until halftime, leaving the Colts up 1-0 at the break.
Young opened the scoring in the second half off a corner kick from Ava Luchetta. The kick was headed by Grace Sherbert onto the waiting foot of Young. This put the Colts up 2-0 with no signs of looking back.
Cavey closed out the match with the final score off an assist from Luchetta. Cavey sent a strong ball to the lower 90 past the keeper. At 3-0, the Colts coasted to a strong finish.
At the end of each wave of games, teams from every field met to hear the winners of the Brittney Spirit Award. This was determined by referees of each game. For the Colts, Hannah McGill received this award, and rightfully so, as McGill exemplified true grit and character every minute she played.
“I would be lying if I said it isn’t a thrill to score a goal, but this year, more than any other year, every goal really is a team goal,” said senior Andi Brinker.
Following the Brittney tournament, the Colts were scheduled to travel down I-95 to Lumberton on Tuesday, followed by a home match against Purnell Swett on Friday. Unfortunately, the Lumberton match was postponed by Lumberton due to field conditions.
The Colts played their first conference match on Friday hosting the Purnell Swett Rams and winning 1-0. Grace Sherbert’s goal with an assist from Ava Luchetta’s in the first half set a high standard for the rest of the game; to play tactically on offense and aggressively on defense. Safe to say the Colts did just that, holding the Rams to zero goals.
“I’m super proud of how our team is coming together and improving our chemistry and confidence on the field. Scoring the only goal on Friday was amazing, and I couldn’t have done it without Ava Luchetta’s incredible assist! Everyone worked hard, and it feels awesome to get that win!” said senior Grace Sherbert.
The Colts have demonstrated determination this past week starting the week with a win and continuing that streak by ending the week with another win. The Colts now stand at 3-1-2 on the season, and they are poised to make noise in the United 8 Conference. It will be exciting to watch the rest of the Colts season to see if they can repeat as conference champs for the fourth year in a row.
