The Cape Fear Colts Softball Team was back in action on the road at St. Paul’s High School Wednesday night for another key non-conference matchup. The Colts put their early season win streak to the test, and the girls certainly passed that test with an 8-0 victory over the Bulldogs, improving their already stellar season record to 7-0.
The ladies found themselves locked in a pitcher’s duel early on after 3 scoreless innings from both squads. However, after an inspiring pep talk from Head Coach Jeff McPhail, a new rally began.
D1 commit Kalilah De La Cruz once again demonstrated her incredible abilities, going 3-4 with 2 RBIs on the night, even in the high-pressure atmosphere. She somehow managed to find a way to get the rally started every time she was at the plate.
The Colts defense was stellar for the night, keeping the Bulldogs off the scoreboard with solid pitching and timely defensive play. Karalina Tomasic started on the mound, striking out 11 and walking none. This was Tomasic’s best performance of the year so far.
“Overall Wednesday’s game was a success; I’m glad I had the support from my teammates in order to continue to push through the game and play the best of my ability,” said Tomasic.
Other Colts bringing in runs were Amari Adams, Kloe Watts, Peyton Eason, and Kayleigh Brewington. Senior Shortstop Allie Dawson was 2-4 with a run scored.
With great pitching, defense, and timely hitting, the Colts are off to their best start since 2022, where they began the season with ten straight wins.
Thursday night, the Colts traveled to Douglas Byrd and galloped home with another win. Several players in the lineup came home with multiple hits and RBIs on the night, racking up the stats and leaving with a 22-0 victory over the Eagles.
Allie Dawson and Amari Adams combined for an eye popping 9 RBIs, with Adams bringing in 5 and Dawson bringing 4 in. Kloe Watts chipped in another 2 hits and an RBI for the Colts, added to the scoring fest.
McKinley Kolasa was in the circle Thursday night, and she threw a perfect game, striking out 9.
“We started off strong and never let off the gas, that’s the key in games. No matter the score, play to the best of your ability and never let up,” said Kolasa after the game.
The Colts will play 3 games this week all at home, starting with Jack Britt Tuesday, Triton Wednesday, and ending the week with Southview on Friday. The girls are now getting into the heart of the United 8 Conference schedule, which is traditionally one of the toughest softball conferences in the state.
