Cape Fear High School’s very own Tye Johnson has made quite the name for himself in the world of high school wrestling. Inspired by his uncle, Tye, at just 16, is a two-time state champion, showcasing his talent and dedication. More than just a wrestler, Tye’s qualities make him the perfect athlete of the week.
Tye is the twin brother of Mac Johnson, and their bond goes beyond just sharing the same birthday. Mac and Tye are not just twins, they are best friends with an unbreakable bond. They do everything together, and their favorite tradition is grabbing a six-pack of Crumble cookies every week trying out their new flavors. They both have a serious love for Sheetz food and Chipotle, making these spots their go to hangout. Whether they are wrestling or chilling, Mac and Tye always have each other’s backs and share endless laughs and great times.
Johnson also said his mom is one of his biggest supporters and someone who is always there for him. She never misses a match and is the loudest cheerleader, always encouraging him to do his very best. Her unwavering support and belief in him gives Tye the confidence to push through tough times and strive for greatness. No matter what challenges he faces, he knows his mom will be there, cheering him on and helping him every step of the way.
A significant influence on Tye’s wrestling career is his mom’s boyfriend, Heath Wilson, who also happens to be the wrestling coach at Cape Fear. Heath’s guidance and support have been instrumental in shaping Tye into the champion he is today. Heath has played a significant role in shaping his life; he’s always there to offer guidance, encouragement, and support, whether it’s on the wrestling mat or in everyday life. Heath’s dedication has had a profound impact on Tye, helping him grow not just as an athlete but as a person. Their bond is strong and Tye knows he can always count on Heath to have his back.
Tye wrestles at both Raw Wrestling and NC United, and these clubs have been pivotal in his life. Through this time at these clubs, he met some of his best friends. He met Tobin Mcnair at Raw Wrestling, and their friendship quickly grew through countless training sessions and matches. Tie also met Samual Gantt when he wrestled him during a club match in New Jersey and again in Las Vegas. These encounters turned into a strong friendship and shared passions for the same sport. The experience and friends he’s gained through wrestling have become an important part of his life, shaping him into the person he is today.
In addition to his wrestling prowess, Tye is actively involved in SGA, where he uses his leadership skills to make a positive impact on the school’s community. Balancing academics, sports and extracurricular activities. Although this is a lot to handle, Tye manages to excel in all areas.
Before every match, he has a special ritual that he follows. He makes it a point to buy a fresh pack of socks, believing that the new socks bring him luck. Additionally, he enjoys listening to Johnny Cash, after playing his favorite songs to pump himself up. To center himself and find focus, he takes a moment to pray at the start of each tournament. These rituals not only help him feel prepared but also add a personal touch to his game day routine.
“Tye is my biggest inspiration, and without him by my side I don’t know what I’d do. I’m so thankful to call him my brother, but even better my twin,” says Mac.
All together these qualities and things Tye has shown within himself, and outside have proved to himself and cape fear that he deserved to be Athlete of the Week. Although Tye has achieved so much already, he wants the Cape Fear team overall to win a team award and he wants to achieve 2 more state championship awards.
Tyes exceptional qualities, both on and off the mat have earned him recognition as Cape Fears Athlete of the Week. His accomplishments are impressive, including significant achievements already under his belt. However, Tye’s ambitions extend beyond individual awards. He desires team success, aiming for a team award and two more state championships next year. His dedication and drive is evident, making him a true asset to the Cape Fears team. He is a role model for aspiring athletes, demonstrating the importance of hard work, perseverance, and teamwork.
