The Cape Fear Softball Team has made it through the first half of their season. After another big conference week for the Ladies, they currently sit at 8-3 overall and 4-2 in United 8 Conference play, good for third place and a sure playoff berth.
The Colts played the Grays Creek Bears Tuesday night. Unfortunately, the Ladies fell just short 9-5. Even though Cape Fear didn’t get the win for the night, many players still had a great performance and fought until the very end.
Freshman Peyton Eason and Sophomore Addison Davis were 3-4 with 1 RBI each. Jaden Valdez batted .667 with an RBI as well.
“It just took one good hit in my first at bat to get my confidence up and really just get me going,” said Eason.
While their bats were on fire, the defense had some holes, committing five errors in the game. This put the Colts behind early, and even with their hard fought performance, they couldn’t quite come out with a win.
The Colts couldn’t stay down for long because they had their second matchup against Lumberton Friday night. After two days of practice, the Colts finally broke their losing streak and came out with a 14-0 win.
Cape Fear had already seen Lumberton once this year, so they knew what they had to do to win.
The Colts had a big performance at the plate, scoring often on each hit.
Amari Adams had an amazing night, hitting her very first homerun! She also hit a single and had an RBI, going 3-4 on the night.
“I knew from when the ball hit the bat, it was a good hit. Maybe not a home run hit, but at least a triple,” said Adams.
Adams wasn’t the only one putting on a show, as McKinley Kolasa batted a perfect 1.000 with 2 hits and a walk. Many players contributed in some way at the plate, which is important in every game.
The team had a much better defensive performance coming out with only 1 error, ultimately shutting down Lumberton’s offensive game.
Kolasa was also in the circle, putting on an absolute clinic of a pitching performance, giving up only 3 hits, walking 1, and striking out 10.
“My teammates encouraged me and had my back in the field and constantly talked me up each inning,” said Kolasa.
The Cape Fear Colts have a big week, with 4 games this week. They will travel to Purnell Swett Tuesday, then to C.B Aycock on Wednesday, and will finish up the week with a double header against 71st at home.
