On Monday, April 28th, the Cape Fear Boys Lacrosse team brought home a thrilling win against their rivals, Terry Sanford, in a match that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
The game kicked off with a strong start from the Colts, as Junior Midfielder Robert McFall made a goal early on, thanks to an assist from Senior Attackman Josh Pirro. This goal set the tone for the match, giving the Colts a promising lead right from the beginning.
“After the game vs Terry two days prior, I came into this game with hunger and a winning mindset. I knew in order to win this game we would have to gain an advantage early, when I subbed on I saw an alley straight to the goal and took the shot. It was good to be able to help my team get ahead,” said McFall.
As the first quarter continued, the intensity of the game increased resulting in a 3-3 tie at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Colts took control of the game by scoring four unanswered goals, fueled by the impressive play of Senior Attackman Jack Donatelle.
However, the Bulldogs didn’t back down and regrouped before halftime, managing to tie the game at 7-7. When the teams returned for the second half, Cape Fear’s defense made a stop that allowed them to regain the lead. Senior defenseman Alex Bridges made history by scoring the first goal by a Cape Fear defenseman in the program’s history.
“This game meant alot to us, after our defeat saturday we used the one day break to focus up. Coming into the game you could feel a whole new atmosphere, we were a different team this time, we were dangerous,” said Bridges.
The match continued to be a rollercoaster of emotions. In the final seconds, Terry Sanford’s Noah Sager managed to tie the game at 14-14, sending it into overtime.
During overtime, the stakes were high. The Colts gained possession thanks to an outstanding face off performance by Trenton Westbrook who also went 74% on the night from center field.
With the clock ticking down, senior attackman Brannon Quinton made a game winning goal that sealed the victory for the Colts with a final score of 15-14.
“Going into the game I knew it was gonna be a dog fight, all the guys had high energy and did everything they could to get us in a position to win. I knew that if I got an open look I was gonna take it and it was gonna send us home with a win. Trent made a great look and I was able to pin it in the corner. It felt great to end the year off with a rivalry win on their senior night,” said Quinton.
The players hard work, teamwork, and determination were shown and this match will
definitely be a highlight of their season.
