The Cape Fear Cross Country team ran on new ground at South Davidson High School in Denton on August 23rd. The meet featured the traditional varsity 5Ks for boys and girls, while also offering a new and unique opportunity for our Colt runners: the 5x2K relay. The outstanding performance on Saturday gave the Colts a great way to showcase their progression and give a glimpse into the potential the team has in future meets!
“Fierce is the way I would describe our team; they came off the bus with a very competitive mind set,” said Head Coach Jason Demchock. “We don’t normally see this level of competitiveness until a couple of weeks into the season but they were ready to come home with a win and they showed up, they worked hard, they were determined, they were focused and we saw a lot of improvements just from the beginning of the summer time.”
At 8:30 AM, both the men’s and women’s 5x2K relay started the meet. The boys placed 1st and the girls placed 3rd. The boys relay started with Lucas Wells, followed by Max Mello, Kayden Giles, Collin Shick, and Chris Shick running the anchor leg. The boys overall time was 35:59.

The Girls relay started with Amelia Osornio, followed by Cara Patterson, Jocelyn Lopez, Venna Cockor, and finishing with Keziah Chambers on the anchor. Their time was 52:20.
“Me and the team felt positive going into the race. It felt good to finally get a win after a long summer of training,” said Collin, the 4th leg in the men’s 5x2K.
“It was really nice being the anchor knowing that my teammates were out there doing their best,” said Keziah, the girls anchor in the women’s 5x2K.
After the middle school races came the high school women’s and men’s 5k. The Colts had 2 girls race in the 5k. Anamarie Brenes finished with a time of 31:34, which was good for 31st place. The next runner was Zotia Farley, who had a time of 33:32 and placed 37th.
Shortly after the girls, the boys 5k started. The Colts lineup featured 6 runners. The top finishers for Cape Fear were Brayden Luchetta, who ran a 20:55 and placed 14th. Soon after he finished, Randy Desjardin finished with a time of 21:08 and placed 15th. Jordan Price was the next to finish for the Colts with a time of 21:34, placing 18th.

This was a fantastic start to the Colts season which is just beginning. All of the runners pushed their limits and left it all on the course while using the cooler temperatures to their advantage. This was an amazing race to debut all of the work they put in all summer.
The Colts next meet will be held at Terry Sanford High School on September 9th starting at 4:30pm. Make sure you come out and support the Colts!
