September 3rd, the Cape Fear Cross Country Team ran close to home at Gray’s Creek High School, but with Terry Sanford as the hosting team, as they do not have a course on their campus. This was the second Conference meet of the season, and another chance for the Colts to push themselves once again at a familiar course, beating records and establishing a name in the Conference.

“We ran a solid race on Wednesday; our top 5 boys are starting to identify themselves, they’re looking strong. We have a lot of other boys who are steadily improving, and we’re happy with that. On the girls side it’s a steady improvement week to week. We saw solid progress and hope to keep seeing it coming,” exclaimed Coach Jason Demchock.

The boys finished 1st overall with 22 points. There were 11 runners this week and 5 made it into the Top 10. With back to back finishes, Chris Shick placed 1st with a time of 18:04, followed by Collin Shick who placed 2nd with a time of 18:17. After they finished, Kayden Giles had a third place finish with a time of 18:49. The boys keep dominating the competition every week and have plans to continue to do so.

“At the start of the race, I went out really fast and I was able to hold on the pace well and ended up winning. Both teams ran really well and showed a lot of improvement from running at this course last year,” said Chris Shick, a top runner at this week’s meet.

The girls placed 3rd overall with 54 points and had 8 runners this week. The first to finish for the Colts was Kaziah Chambers, who placed 4th with a time of 23:38. The next to finish was Amelia Osornio, who placed 9th with a time of 26:03. Then, Venna Cokor finished with a time of 28:52 in the 16 hole. Comparing this meet to the last, there has been substantial amounts of improvement from the Lady Colts.

“I feel that it went well for me, I pushed myself harder and can already see myself improving from the last 2 races we’ve had. I didn’t beat my PR in this race so I hope to beat it Saturday which I see achievable,” said Cokor, a freshman runner for the Colts.

This was a remarkable meet for all the Colts as they demonstrated perseverance through the tough challenges they encountered on the course. The Colts next meet will be held at Red Oak Middle School on September 6th, kicking off at 9:00am. Come out and support the Colts!
