If you have been following Cape Fear High School’s football season, then you know about the trials this team has faced, but you also know about their PRIDE and willingness to CLIMB to get to the top. The internal morals of this team, as well as their devotion to physical conditioning in the late nights and early mornings, proved successful last Friday night against Westover.

Senior Quarterback Geronimo Sanchez was able to get the ball rolling Friday night going 14 of 20 passing. Sanchez threw the ball for 176 yards, threw 2 touchdown passes and 2 interceptions to help the Colts lock in their win. The senior quarterback also had 20 rushing attempts for 103 yards. Sanchez was able to come back stronger this week with an improved completion rate, resulting in a significant amount of yards gained.

“The mindset I have for myself is that I have to be at my best and when I’m at my best the team is at theirs. Also for our team we want to go 1-0 every week. We want to come into practice and work hard so that on Friday nights it comes easy,” said Sanchez.

Junior Wide Receiver Landon Underwood turned in a high-light reel night, turning heads and living up to his theme of being Cape Fear’s “all-purpose” guy. He broke free for a 53 yard rushing touchdown, pulled in 4 catches for 46 yards and another score, and jump started the second half by lighting up the score board with a 75 yard kickoff return touchdown.

“That win really got us on track after we had lost two straight games. Scoring three touchdowns helped us tremendously because we had so many turnovers; we had to make something happen to win that game to not have a continuous losing record,” said Underwood. “We plan to execute everything in practice as we know we can, and have good practices all week to keep winning,” he states.

Underwood’s devotion to personal and team growth is evident and applaudable.

At wide receiver, Senior Chosen Wynn served his team as a trustworthy target in the endzone. With 6 receptions for 89 yards and a score- each passing game Wynn continues to make his mark and pull his weight to let the Colts taste a victory.

Wynn has been coming back from an injury, but that didn’t stop him from having a “lights out” performance against Westover. “I had a great performance against Westover, even coming off of an injury from the past week. I hope to keep that rolling, coming into this week with Pine Forest. Even though this is our last non-conference game, I hope we can achieve the win and just work to bigger and better things,” says Wynn.

Not only did offense have themselves an evening, the Cape Fear defense displayed grit, and was able to push through the line and overall collected 4 sacks on Westover’s offense. The Wolverines put up a hard fight, but the Colts fought even harder. With a 10 point lead, Cape Fear took the win with a final score of 30-20.

This Friday, football will be back in Colt Country taking on Pine Forest High School. With one last non-conference game, the Colts are ready to continue their winning streak and head into conference play with a confident record behind them. Come out this Friday and cheer on your favorite football team in the 910!
