The Cape Fear Colts Volleyball team was back in action this past week with multiple games, both on the road and at home. The team had a week of ups and downs, but also put in the work and fought a hard fight.
Starting the week the Colts were on the road with a tough match up against the Grays Creek Bears. The Colts and Bears are always an entertaining game to watch. Both teams constantly put up a fight making this matchup one of the best to watch. After displaying perseverance and grit the Colts won one set, but the Bears ultimately took the match. Set scores were 26-28, 18-25, 25-18, and 20-25.
We’re here to ask one of our starting players, Sophomore Sophia Wilson on her perspective of the game.
“Overall I think we played a well rounded match, our passing was great and coverage was excellent but we need to work on taking advantage of the opportunities we get in the front row and siding-out quickly. We start the game with a good amount of energy and adrenaline and we just need to work on making that energy last the entire game so that we can limit our unforced errors,” said starting sophomore setter Sophia Wilson.
Senior Tabitha Newlin has been a huge asset on this team since her freshman year, she’s had a great start to her final season.
“Against Grays Creek I thought we played really well. I think that we played good as a team but one thing I think we need to work on is our coverage for tips. I was very impressed with how well we played against them and I can’t wait to see how we play them next week.” said starting senior outside Tabitha Newlin.
On Thursday, Volleyball was back in Colt Country where they hosted Terry Sanford. After Tuesday’s loss, the Colts were able to bounce back and take down the Bulldogs in a quick 3 sets. These ladies were able to put the ball down and display their coverage skills which helped secure their win. The sets concluded with final scores of 25-5 in the first, 25-15 in the second set, and 25-18 in the third. The Lady Colts demonstrated grit and their ability to bounce back.
“I think we played very well against the Bulldogs and we did a good job with running our plays in this game. It was nice to see some of the girls who don’t play as often get their chance to show their skills and get in good game-like touches. I think that we have improved so much as a team already and I can’t wait to see what we look like in October,” said senior libero Ava Parker.
The Colts are working hard and building up their momentum every practice. These ladies are ready to continue putting up a fight as they will play the Midway Raiders Monday at home. Come out and support these hardworking Volleyball players as they hope to keep the momentum going and secure another win.
