Last Friday, the Cape Fear Colts faced the Pine Forest Trojans on the Colt Stomping Grounds. The Colts captured their second consecutive win, which was huge for the Colts in keeping up some strong momentum as they head into next week’s Homecoming game. Cape Fear’s offense fired on all cylinders against Pine Forest, and it was a lot of fun to watch the fireworks.

Senior Quarterback Geronimo Sanchez made every minute count against the Trojans, as Sanzez completed 7 for 10 passes for 103 yards and 2 touchdowns. With a 70% completion rate, Geronimo gave the ball its adequate air time while also making applaudable plays downfield. With 11 rushes accumulating 140 yards and an additional touchdown, Geronimo showed his versatility as the Quarterback, producing success with a throw or running the ball.

“Last Friday I felt like we executed the game well, we ran the ball pretty well. We had three different players that scored during the game and we were able to come together as a team to end off non-conference. This game is gonna help us go into conference play by taking the same momentum with us and hopefully make it to the State Championship,” said Senior Quarterback Geronimo Sanchez

Junior Running Back Dy’lan Parker had a dynamic performance, proving his ability to route runs strategically is successful. He had 7 rushes, accumulating 158 yards for the night. His most electrifying run was for 79 yards all the way to the endzone, bringing in a touchdown for his team. Parker would be named Player of the Game afterward.

Parker is a man of few words, but his statements hold true. “Our goal is to work hard and win… and for me to get another touchdown.”

Senior Running Back Jason Nelson powered the offense on the ground by breaking past tackles and pushing through strong defenses. He carried the ball 9 times for the night with a 55 yard rushing touchdown. Nelson is consistently able to create offensive opportunities for his team week after week. His ability to find the end zone against Pine Forest was a big energy boost for the team and pushed a Home victory in the palm of their hands.

“I try to motivate the team to do their jobs and be successful in their own way. Even if they mess up, I try to be like, ‘Hey, the next play is THE most important play.’ It doesn’t matter how many times you mess up, as long as you get in right in the game,” Nelson added.

Nelson spoke further about his personal performance, including his touchdown. “I try not to mess up. Just wreck havoc on the enemy team. I don’t want them to think they have a chance. I try to get the first impression.” Nelson’s energy and drive he brings to the Colts is applaudable- and it’s the kind of spirit that makes Colt Country proud.

Junior Wide Receiver Landon Underwood continues to show Colt Country why he is Cape Fear’s “all purpose” guy. Underwood had 4 rushes for 87 yards and 1 rushing touchdown for 57 yards. This junior didn’t just stop there; he continued to help the Colts secure their win all night long. With 3 receptions, Underwood was able to gain another touchdown for 37 yards.

Week after week Landon is determined to keep pushing himself to put his best foot forward. He has proved that even under pressure he is able to get down the field and help keep the team on track. When the dust settled Friday night, Underwood had scored five touchdowns in the last two games for the Colts.

Senior Wide Receiver Chosen Wynn had another great performance on the field. Wynn had 2 receptions and gained 1 touchdown for Cape Fear for 24 yards. Even coming back from an injury, he is able to lock in and do what is best for his team. Not only did Wynn get it done at receiver, he also was a key component for the Colt secondary, where he was on the field for a personal record number of defensive snaps.

He certainly pulls his weight in securing wins for Cape Fear and continuously shows why he is a trustworthy target on the field.

In all, the Colts totaled 558 yards of total offense Friday night, 452 of those on the ground. The offensive firepower was impressive.

The Colts are constantly putting in the work and ready to finish out the rest of the season stronger than when they started. This week there will be no football for the Colts, but they will be back and ready to take on the Lumberton Pirates on October 3rd for the Homecoming game. Rest up Colt fans and be ready to be loud next week in Colt Country for the 2025 Homecoming game!
