Yesterday the Cape Fear Soccer teams took on big conference rivals, Gray’s Creek Highschool. This game was a very important matchup in deciding the conference winner. Despite the rain, it was not going to stop these teams from putting up a fight.
The JV Colts started off strong in the first half scoring 4 great goals to help lead at halftime with a 4-0 shutout.
The Colts didn’t let up in the second half, continuing to put more goals in the back of the net with a final score of 10-2.
The Colts dominated on both sides of the field despite the poor field conditions.
Freshman Ibrahim Yasana was named offensive player of the match and played a huge role in the Colts dominant victory. Yasana got 3 goals and 2 assists during the game.
“It was awesome being able to get 5 goal contributions out of the 10, l hope to keep up these performances throughout the rest of the season,” stated Yasana.
The Varsity Colts played later for a huge conference match up against the Bears. Gray’s Creek was undefeated up to this game with a record of 7 wins and 2 draws. The Colts were unfazed by this record and were ready to hand the Bears their first loss of the season.
The boys showed their determination right off the bat with Sophomore Aiden Hale scoring a beautiful curled goal into the side netting in the second minute. Hale took advantage of the muddy surface to knee slide into the corner flag and celebrate with the team.
“It was amazing being able to put us up so early in the game,” exclaimed Hale “I’m happy I was able to contribute to our big win over Gray’s Creek.”
A lucky goal for the Bears allowed them to tie it up 1-1 at halftime. The Colts were pumped up by Head Coach Bryan Pagan and were ready to fight for the win in the second half.
The boys were controlling the half and Gray’s Creek couldn’t find any opportunities to score. The Colts however were creating chance after chance, until Senior Francisco Garcia Rodriguez was finally able to get the important goal to put the Colts up. He hit a crazy knuckle ball from 30 yards outside the box into the back of the net. Garcia Rodriguez slid into the corner flag with the team as his goal would be the decider in the Colts’ 2-1 victory.
The muddy surface and intimidating record posed by the opponents did not faze the Colts at all as they now sit first in the conference after this big win.
Make sure to support your Colts once again on Wednesday, September 30th for yet another big conference game against bitter rivals, Terry Sanford.
