On Tuesday September 30th, the Colts hosted their annual Powderpuff game. This is a Cape Fear High School Homecoming week tradition. It’s an exciting event where the girls take the field to play flag football and the boys cheer them on to show their team spirit.

To start the game, Seniors Abby Cook and Naara Peralta went up against Junior Addison Davis for the coin toss. The Seniors won the toss, allowing them to start with the ball. Naara Peralta started off strong for the seniors, running the ball and scoring the first touchdown.

This game has a long history of intense competition between the juniors and seniors. Over the years, there’s been plenty of friendly trash talk and some rough moments on the field too.

Tuesday night, both teams played a fair game and gave the crowd a thrilling game to watch. The two classes really showed their skills in flag football.

Jill Chesher scored the first touchdown for the juniors making the score 18-6. Catching up again, Neveah scored the second touchdown for the juniors.

“I can’t say enough about how proud I am of our Junior ladies and the effort they put in. For them, this was a chance to compete, to build some real team chemistry, and to be part of a Cape Fear tradition. For me, it was a chance to get back into coaching, even if just for a month — and I loved every second of it,”  said Coach Meinenger

The Juniors put up a tough fight against the Seniors. At the start of the second half they came back stronger ready to hold their own, but unfortunately were unable to hold back the seniors. “The game didn’t end the way we hoped, but I’ll tell you this: these ladies fought to the final whistle. They showed resilience, they showed heart, and they proved they don’t back down when things get tough. That’s the kind of fight you want to see, and it inspires me,” exclaimed Junior Coach Nick Meinenger

After a hard fought loss last year the Seniors came back ready to win. Play after play the seniors were making their way down the field. The seniors had a strong team and have worked hard to play as a team, ultimately helping them lock in their win.

While the Juniors were unable to take the win, Mr. Meinenger was happy to see the Seniors earn their win, but also for both teams’ hard work to be showcased.

“To the seniors — congrats on a hard-earned win. From the first snap, you came out hungry, and you earned every single yard and touchdown. Hats off to Coach Churchill too — he had you ready to play, and it showed. Looks like the series is tied up 1-1 now. See you next year!!” said junior coach Mr. Meinenger.

PowderPuff is truly a highlight of Homecoming Week. The game is one of those days that takes away the stress of Homecoming. In Colt Country PowderPuff has always been a fan favorite. Members of the community always show out and love to witness the girls play football and the hilarious halftime show put on by our boy cheerleaders.

“We all had so much fun; it was definitely better than last year when we tragically lost. Things like this are what make high school fun,” said senior linebacker Abby Cook.  “Scoring a touchdown on the first play of the game was pretty cool. I also thought the defense did really well especially for being out there the entire time.”

The senior girls have always had a strong defensive team. Every member of the team had one goal, and that was to not let the juniors get past them.

“I think defensively we did really well, and I got the game ball so I really just can’t even believe it. That was the highlight of my senior year so far,” said senior Kayleigh Jacobs.

Throughout the game the Juniors gave the seniors a run for their money. The juniors were able to get two touchdowns on the seniors showcasing their amazing offensive skills.

“I think the game was pretty even, I just think the seniors had more of an advantage by having more athletic players and just having faster players. I think we had a good chance with our offense besides Kayleigh Jacobs being really fast on the outside. Kayleigh and Nariyah coming straight at you can be pretty intimidating,” said junior tailback Emily Harris.

We are extremely thrilled with pride for both teams. I’m sure the juniors will be waiting for their comeback next year. After all, history does repeat itself.

Congratulations to the SENIORS!! They showed amazing hard work and determination, making their victory well-deserved and unforgettable!
