On Saturday October 4th, The Cape Fear Colts ran at Hagan Stone Park for the Hagan Stone XC Classic. This was a new invitational for the Colts and was a great way for the team to continue their progress. This was a perfect day and course for them to break their personal records (PR’s).
“The boys went to the Hagan Stone cross country meet on Saturday; it was a gorgeous course with a lot of tough competition. We had several boys run PR’s in the beautiful weather. The team as a whole placed 11 out of 22 teams, so top half, and it was a great day all around for the boys,” said Coach Jason Demchock.
The boys placed 11th out of 26 teams with a score of 294. The team had 10 runners this week.
Junior Collin Shick came 38th with a time of 17:28. Collin has been running cross country since his sophomore year, but has ran Track since his freshman year. Just one second after, Junior Chris Shick finished placing 39th with a time of 17:29. Chris has also ran cross country since his sophomore year and ran track since his freshman year like his twin brother, Collin. Senior Kayden Giles was the next Colt to finish placing 56th with a time of 18:14. He has been running since he was in middle school. These 3 boys have constantly placed top 3 for the Colts continuing to get better and better.
“I felt really strong and raced the smartest I have all season by starting slower and picking it up as I went, this was definitely the best of the team as a whole. Did almost everybody run a season best or was less than 10 seconds off from it,” said Chris.
Senior Lucas Wells finished 83rd with a time of 19:12. Wells has been running since his sophomore year and runs track as well. Sophomore Maximus Mello was the 5th Colt to finish placing 87th with a time of 19:22. This was Max’s first year doing cross country for the Colts, but has participated in XC previously at a different school. There was fierce competition at this meet but our top 5 boys managed to hold on and persevere.
“Even though it was a harder course than expected with the hills and roots, a lot of the boys broke their PR’s and enjoyed the course the most, especially me mentally I turned off my mind and ran through the pain,” Said Lucas.
The Colts boys team’s strong performance showed their hard work and determination, setting the tone for a successful rest of the season. With every race the team continues to grow stronger and more united. The Colts next meet will be held at Luther Britt Park hosted by Lumberton on Wednesday October 8th, at 4:30pm. Make sure you come and support your Colts.
